Improved Brakes Are Now Used {4131}
`
Track-Type Tractor:
D9R (S/N: ABK1-UP; 7TL1-UP)

Description of Change: An improved brake group is now used on the D9R Track-Type Tractor with differential steering. The outer diameter of the thrust washer has been reduced and the depth of the pilot bore in the retainer has been increased. The hub has also been modified in order to accommodate the new retainer. This change improves retention of the thrust washer and increases service life of the brake group.

Adaptable To: The new 222-7931 Brake Group is effective with D9R (S/N: ABK821-UP). The new brake group is adaptable to D9R (S/N: ABK1-820; 7TL1-UP). The new 222-7931 Brake Group replaces the former 8E-2231 Brake Group. The part numbers in the brake group that have changes are shown in Table 1.

Table 1
Item     Former Part     New Part     Description
1     6T-0850     231-4173     Outboard Thrust Washer
2     8E-2233     222-7929     Retainer
3     8E-2234     8E-2234 (1)     Hub
( 1 ) The part number of the hub has not changed, but design changes have been made. A new retainer requires either a new hub or modifications to the previous version of the hub. Instructions follow.

Note: The 6T-0850 Thrust Washer (A) is still used on the inboard side of the hub between the hub and the retainer. When you rebuild the brake group, check the dimensions of the thrust washer. Refer to Illustration 2. If the thrust washer does not meet the specifications, use a new 6T-0850 Thrust Washer .Dimensions of the Thrust Washers

Reworking the Brake Group

During the repair, always inspect all parts for damage and for conformance to specifications.

The 8E-2234 Hub on D9R (S/N: ABK1-820; 7TL1-UP) is not compatible with the new 222-7929 Retainer. Either a new 8E-2234 Hub must be ordered or the existing hub must be modified according to the following procedure.

Reuse of the Existing Hub with the New Retainer

Bore diameter (K) must be increased to 257.75 ± 0.2 mm (10.148 ± 0.008 inch). Also, a chamfer of 1 mm (0.04 inch) by 45° must be added to corner (J) .

Checking the Running Clearance of the Thrust Washer

  1. Assemble the brake group without friction plates and without separator plates. Make sure that the thrust washers meet the required specifications.

  1. Place a piece of clay, solder, or plastic gage between the inboard thrust washer and the retainer. Refer to Illustration 4.

  1. Assemble the retainer and torque the ten bolts.

  1. Carefully remove the bolts and the retainer.

  1. Measure the clearance between the inboard thrust washer and the retainer. See Table 2 for the required clearance.

    Table 2
Running Clearance between Thrust Washer and Retainer
    Minimum
    0.59 mm (0.023 inch)
    Nominal
    1.72 mm (0.068 inch)
    Maximum
    2.87 mm (0.113 inch)
If the running clearance is not found within the specifications, inspect the individual parts.
