Service Magazine SEPD1069, 22 January 2010, "New Machine Software Containing An Additional Steering Pattern For Joystick Steering And Other Improvements Is Now Being Used On D-Series Track-Type Loaders". Disregard this article. See the article that follows. The only change in this article is a new part number for the Power Train Software Gp.

Description of Change: New machine software is now used on D-Series Track-Type Loaders. The new software contains the following improvements:

  • New steering configurations for joystick steering

  • Change to the Electronic Pressure Override (ePOR) underspeed reset logic

  • Travel distance cumulatives

  • Removed the crank timeout limit

  • Improved diagnostics for the throttle switch

  • Improved calibrations of the hydrostatic pumps and motors on the 973D

The new steering configurations for the joystick steering will allow the machine to be configured for either S-Pattern or C-Pattern steering. Use the procedure below for changing this configuration.

The change to the ePOR underspeed reset logic is to keep the ePOR from resetting when the machine is doing a counterrotate and the joystick is changed from the FORWARD position to the NEUTRAL position or from the REVERSE position to the NEUTRAL position. The only time that the ePOR underspeed will reset is when the joystick is in the CENTER position.

The travel distance cumulatives has been fixed. The travel distances are now stored, retrieved, and maintained correctly from ignition cycle to ignition cycle.

The crank timeout limit has been removed. There was a sixty second limit imposed by the software on cranking. Then the operator must turn to the key to the OFF position and then back to the ON position in order to crank the engine again. This is not required and has been removed.

The improved diagnostic strategy for the throttle switch will minimize fault codes that are generated during switch operation transition state.

The improved calibrations of the hydrostatic pumps and motors on the 973D will prevent false errors during the calibrations procedure.

Adaptable To: The new 357-2613 Machine Software Gp is a direct replacement for all of the following machine software:

  • 273-9149 Machine Software Gp

  • 288-8072 Machine Software Gp

  • 312-0947 Machine Software Gp

  • 306-8120 Machine Software Gp

  • 320-6600 Machine Software Gp

  • 322-3759 Machine Software Gp

  • 324-8144 Machine Software Gp

  • 327-0160 Machine Software Gp

  • 342-4836 Machine Software Gp

  • 354-8617 Machine Software Gp

Note: The implement valve solenoids will need to be recalibrated if 327-0160 Machine Software Gp or earlier software is being replaced with the new 357-2613 Machine Software Gp .The new software is effective with the following machines:

  • 953D (S/N: LBP975-UP)

  • 963D (S/N: LCS1154-UP)

  • 973D (S/N: LCP112-UP)

The new software is adaptable to the following machines:

  • 953D (S/N: LBP1-974)

  • 963D (S/N: LCS1-1153)

  • 973D (S/N: LCP1-111)

Procedure To Modify the Steering Pattern On D-Series Track-Type Loaders That Are Equipped With Joystick Steering

Note: The new software allows the joystick steering to be configured as "S-Pattern" or "C-Pattern".

Note: A factory password is required to switch the steering pattern.

Configuration Instructions

  1. Attach the Special Instruction to the Operation and Maintenance Manual for your machine.

  1. Install film (1) on the left cab post.

  1. Load the new machine software into the Machine ECM with AVSpare Electronic Technician (ET).

  1. Select "Configuration Group 1" in Cat ET, if using Cat ET 2009C or earlier version. If using Cat ET 2010A or newer select "Hystat Parameters". Then select "Steering Pattern".

  1. Select "C-Pattern" in the pull-down menu. Then enter the factory password.

Note: After the password has been entered correctly the machine will be configured for "C-Pattern" steering.

  1. Turn the key to the OFF position. Then after one minute, the machine may be started.

  1. Use Messenger to adjust the "Steering" and "Hystat" sensitivity.

Note: The suggested setting are "Low" for the steering modulation and "Low" for the hystat.

Note: There are two settings for steering in Messenger (rate and modulation). Only change the "Modulation" setting to "Low".

Note: "Steering" and "Hystat" settings can only be changed from Messenger. These setting can only be changed in Cat ET if the machine is not equipped with Messenger.

  1. Before operating the machine verify that the steering pattern has changed by slowly moving the joystick in all directions and observing the machines response.

  1. The following are some suggestions for using the new C-Pattern steering:

    • Advise the operators to work slowly until the operators have adjusted to the new steering pattern.

    • If the operator wants the machine to be more aggressive, use Messenger in order to adjust the "Hystat" or "Steering Modulation" to "Medium". The maximum setting is "Medium".

ReferenceRefer to Systems Operation, KENR6326 for more information on adjusting setting in Messenger.
