Service Magazine SEPD1008, 7 September 2009, "New Shims are Available for Certain 630 Wheel Tractor-Scrapers". Disregard this article. See the article that follows.

Description of Change: New shims are available for the engine assembly for the machines that are listed above. The new shims help properly align the main drive shaft. This will ease assembly of the machine and this will extend the service life of the drive shaft, carrier bearings, and engine supports.

Adaptable To: The new shims are adaptable to the following machines.

  • 631G (S/N: DFA1-364)

  • 637G (S/N: DFJ1-393)

The new shims are effective with the following machines.

  • 631G (S/N: DFA365-UP)

  • 637G (S/N: DFJ394-UP)

350 N (78 lb) of force will slide the drive shaft when the engine mounts are shimmed properly. Be sure to use the same shim thickness on the left and on the right engine mounts. Refer to Table 1 for the list of available shims.

Installation Procedure

  1. Make sure that the surfaces of the engine mounts are clean.

  1. Set the engine into position.

  1. Check engine side to side alignment. Shift the engine sideways in order to line up the drive shaft.

  1. Torque front engine mounts to 370 ± 50 N·m (270 ± 37 lb ft).

  1. Check vertical alignment of shaft. Add shims to the rear engine mount if the rear engine mount needs shims.

  1. Slide the drive shaft in all the way. The drive shaft should slide easily.

  1. If the shaft does not slide easily, add shims to front mounts in order to level the engine. Raise the front of engine until the drive shaft slides freely. Measure distance between front engine support and the front crossmember. Subtract 35 mm (1.4 inch) from the measured distance. This measurement is the required shim thickness. Install the shims under front mounts.

  1. Torque all of the engine mounting bolts. Torque the front mounting bolts to 370 ± 50 N·m (270 ± 37 lb ft). Torque the rear mounting bolts to 215 ± 40 N·m (160 ± 30 lb ft).

  1. Remove the drive shaft.

  1. Verify that the drive shaft is properly aligned and reinstall the drive shaft. The drive shaft should slide easily.

  1. If the shaft does not slide easily, repeat Step 5 through Step 10.

Note: Use the same number and thickness of shims on each side of the machine.

Note: Front mounts must always be torqued when you check the vertical alignment of the drive shaft.
