Disassembly Procedure

Start By:

1. Remove the torque converter. Refer to Disassembly and Assembly, "Torque Converter - Remove".

Note: The disassembly procedure is identical for a torque converter that does not have a lockup clutch and a freewheel race.

1. Place the torque converter housing assembly on wood blocks. The weight of the torque converter is 1250 kg (2850 lb).

2. Remove bolt (2), retainer (3) and yoke (1) .

3. Remove O-ring seal (4) from yoke (1) .

4. Remove speed sensor (5). Remove eleven bolts (6) .

5. Remove seven bolts (8) and pump adapter (7) from housing assembly (11) .

6. Install Tooling (B) on torque converter housing (11), as shown. Attach a hoist and suitable lifting slings to Tooling (B).

7. Remove four bolts (9) and manifold (10) .

8. Remove five O-ring seals from manifold (10) (not shown).

9. Use suitable forcing screws to separate housing assembly (11) from the torque converter assembly.

10. Remove lip seal (13), bearing cup (12), and O-ring seals (14) from pump adapter (7) .

14. Turn housing assembly (11) onto the opposite side and remove two O-ring seals (18) .

15. Attach a hoist and Tooling (B) to pump adapter (21). Remove two bolts (20) and adapter (19). Remove O-ring seal (23) .

16. Remove bolts (22), shims and pump adapter (21) .

17. Remove bearing cup (22) and O-ring seal (23) from pump adapter (21) .

18. Remove pump drive gear (24) from housing assembly (11) .

19. Remove retaining ring (27), the O-ring seal (not shown), two bearing cones (25) and spline adapter (26) from pump drive gear (24) .

20. Repeat Steps15 through 19 in order to remove the remaining pump adapter.

21. Remove orifice plug (28) and O-ring seal (29) from housing assembly (11) .

22. Position torque converter assembly (33), as shown. Remove twelve bolts (30). Install suitable forcing screws in holes (31). Use the forcing screws to separate pilot guide (32) from torque converter assembly (33) .

24. Remove three bolts (34), retainer (35) and washer (36) .

26. Attach a hoist and a suitable lifting device to Tooling (B), as shown. Install Tooling (C) and a washer on the turbine hub in order to prevent the turbine assembly from separating from the bearing. Remove clutch housing assembly (38) .

35. Remove snap ring (60), thrust bearing (59) and stator assembly (58) .

39. Heat stator (69) to a maximum temperature of 149°C (300°F). Remove cam assembly (68) and ring (67) .

40. Install two bolts (73) and two nuts in order to hold the housing for the impeller clutch (72) to the backing plate. Attach a hoist and a suitable lifting device to Tooling (D), as shown. Remove impeller clutch (71) from shaft assembly (70) .

41. Attach a hoist and a suitable lifting device to Tooling (B), as shown. Remove impeller (77) from impeller housing (78) .

42. Remove thrust bearing (74), sleeve (75) and two pins (76) .

43. Remove plate (79). If necessary, remove four dowel pins (81) that are located under plate (79). Remove twelve bolts (82), adapter (83) and sleeve bearing (80) .

46. Attach a hoist and a suitable lifting device to Tooling (B), as shown. Remove backing plate (86) from impeller housing (78) for the impeller clutch.

53. Drive in locator pin (101) and remove seal carrier (98). Remove bearing (100) from the carrier assembly (102) .

55. Remove lip seal (103), speed sensor (104) and plug (106) .

56. Remove the O-ring seal from plug (106) .
