  1. Heat bearing cone (18) to 135°C (275°F). Use suitable gloves to install bearing cone (18) on hub (15), as shown. Make sure that the bearing cone is properly seated.

    Illustration 8g00370583

  1. Install Tooling (B) in the holes of hub (15), as shown.

  1. Attach a hoist to the lifting slings. Carefully install hub (15) in gear (16). The weight of the hub is 193 kg (425 lb).

Note: The weight of the gear is 127 kg (280 lb).

    Illustration 9g00371054

    Illustration 10g00370582

  1. Install ring (19) on gear (16) .

  1. Install six bolts (17) that hold ring (19) in the groove of gear (16). The torque for bolts (17) is 25 ± 6 N·m (19 ± 4 lb ft).

    Illustration 11g00370581

  1. Install Tooling (B) in the hole of hub (15). Repeat this step for the two remaining holes.

  1. Attach a hoist to the lifting slings. Carefully install hub (15) and gear (16) in the wheel as a unit. The combined weight of the hub and of the gear is 320 kg (705 lb).

Note: Steps 15 through 27 are for the proper wheel bearing adjustment.

    Illustration 13g00372735

  1. Use Tooling (F) to measure the thickness of retainer (13) at each of the three small gauge holes. Average the three measurements and record the result.

  1. Install retainer (13) without the shims. Apply oil on the threads of five bolts (12) and install the bolts, as shown.

  1. Tighten five bolts (12) to a torque of 110 ± 15 N·m (81 ± 11 lb ft) according to the tightening sequence in Illustration 13.

  1. Rotate the wheel by 360 degrees. Check the bolts and tighten the bolts again, if necessary.

  1. Loosen bolts (12). Rotate the wheel by 360 degrees in order to unload the bearings.

  1. Tighten bolts (12) to a torque of 48 ± 8 N·m (36 ± 6 lb ft) according to the tightening sequence in Illustration 13.

  1. Rotate the wheel by 360 degrees. Check the bolts and tighten the bolts again, if necessary.

    Illustration 14g00372737

  1. Use Tooling (E) to measure the depth through the three small gauge holes of retainer (13). Average the three measurements and record the result.

  1. Subtract the average thickness of the retainer (Step 15) from the average depth (Step 22). The difference is the gap between the end of the spindle and retainer (13) .

Subtract 0.15 mm (0.006 inch) from the gap. The remainder is the required thickness of shims.

  1. Use Tooling (G) to measure the shim pack. The thickness of the shim pack must be within 0.025 mm (0.001 inch) of the required thickness of shims.

  1. Remove bolts (12) and retainer (13) .

    Illustration 15g00370578

  1. Install the required thickness of shim pack (14) .

    Illustration 16g00370577

  1. Install retainer (13) and bolts (12). The torque for bolts (12) is 475 ± 60 N·m (350 ± 45 lb ft).

    Illustration 17g00370574

  1. Install sleeve bearing (11) in planetary gear (9). The sleeve bearing is a slip fit to the planetary gear.

    Illustration 18g00372834

  1. Install thrust washer (10) in planetary carrier (3). Apply clean final drive oil to the contact surface of the thrust washer.
