Start By:
- Separate the final drive and the wheel from the service brake. Refer to Disassembly and Assembly, "Final Drive and Wheel from Service Brake - Separate".
NOTICE |
---|
Care must be taken to ensure that fluids are contained during performance of inspection, maintenance, testing, adjusting and repair of the machine. Be prepared to collect the fluid with suitable containers before opening any compartment or disassembling any component containing fluids. Refer to Special Publication, NENG2500, "AVSpare Tools and Shop Products Guide", for tools and supplies suitable to collect and contain fluids in AVSpare machines. Dispose of all fluids according to local regulations and mandates. |
- Place the final drive and the wheel in a vertical position on a hard, level surface. The combined weight of the final drive and of the wheel is 1565 kg (3450 lb).

- Remove four bolts (1) that fasten the planetary carrier to the wheel.
Illustration 2 | g00370543 |
- Attach Tooling (A), a hoist and suitable lifting chains to planetary carrier (3), as shown.
Illustration 3 | g00370545 |
- Install two 1/2 - 13 NC forcing screws (2) in the threaded holes of the planetary carrier. Tighten the forcing screws evenly in order to free planetary carrier (3) from wheel (4) .
- Carefully remove planetary carrier (3). The weight of the planetary carrier is 475 kg (1050 lb).
Note: Steps 6 through 14 are for the disassembly of the planetary carrier.
- Remove O-ring seal (5) from planetary carrier (3) .
Illustration 4 | g00370546 |
- Install Tool (D) with a lifting sling into the threaded hole in planetary shaft (6), as shown.
Illustration 5 | g00999772 |
- Remove planetary shaft (6) from planetary carrier (3). The planetary shaft is a slip fit to the planetary carrier. The weight of the planetary shaft is 11 kg (25 lb).
- Remove dowel (7) from planetary shaft (6) .
Illustration 6 | g00370548 |
- Remove thrust washer (8) .
Illustration 7 | g00370549 |
- Place wood blocks next to planetary carrier (3), as shown. Carefully slide planetary gear (9) from the planetary carrier and onto the wood blocks, as shown. The weight of the planetary gear is 61 kg (135 lb).
Illustration 8 | g00370550 |
- Remove thrust washer (10) .
Illustration 9 | g00370572 |
- Remove sleeve bearing (11) from planetary gear (9). The sleeve bearing is a slip fit to the planetary gear.
Illustration 10 | g00370574 |
- Repeat Steps 7 through 13 for the remaining two planetary gears.
- Remove bolts (12) and retainer (13) .
Illustration 11 | g00370577 |
- Remove shim pack (14) .
Illustration 12 | g00370578 |
- Install Tooling (B) in the hole of hub (15). Repeat this step for the two remaining holes, as shown.
Illustration 13 | g00370579 |
Illustration 14 | g00370581 |
- Attach a hoist to the lifting slings. Carefully remove hub (15) and gear (16) as a unit. The combined weight of the hub and of the gear is 320 kg (705 lb).
- Place the hub and the gear on wood blocks so that bearing cone (18) is facing upward.

Illustration 16 | g00371054 |
- Remove six bolts (17) that hold ring (19) in the groove of gear (16) .
- Remove ring (19) from gear (16) .
- Install Tooling (B) in the holes of hub (15) again, as shown.
Illustration 17 | g00370583 |
- Attach a hoist to the lifting slings. Carefully remove hub (15) from gear (16). The weight of the hub is 193 kg (425 lb).
Note: The weight of the gear is 127 kg (280 lb).
- To remove bearing cone (18) from hub (15), turn the hub onto the opposite side so that the bearing cone is facing downward, as shown.
Illustration 18 | g00370584 |
Illustration 19 | g00370585 |
Typical Example |
- Use a torch to heat the bearing cone evenly around the circumference. Continue to heat the bearing cone until the bearing cone falls from the hub.
Note: Do not apply heat directly to the hub. Excessive heat may reduce the service life of the hub.
- Secure Tooling (C) to wheel (4). Attach a hoist to Tooling (C) .
Illustration 20 | g00370588 |
- Use the hoist to carefully remove wheel (4) from spindle (20). The weight of the wheel is 430 kg (950 lb).
- Use Tooling (C) to lower wheel (4) to a horizontal position, as shown.
Illustration 21 | g00370590 |
- Remove Duo-Cone seal (23) .
Illustration 22 | g00370591 |
- Use a hammer and a punch to remove bearing cups (21) and (22) .
- Remove Duo-Cone seal (24) from spindle (20) .
Illustration 23 | g00370613 |
Illustration 24 | g00370585 |
Typical Example |
- To remove bearing cone (25) from spindle (20), turn the spindle onto the opposite side so that the bearing cone is facing downward, as shown.
- Use a torch to heat the bearing cone evenly around the circumference. Continue to heat the bearing cone until the bearing cone falls from the spindle.
Note: Do not apply heat directly to the spindle. Excessive heat may reduce the service life of the spindle.
