Removal Procedure

Start By:

  1. Release the hydraulic system pressure. Refer to Disassembly and Assembly, "Hydraulic System Pressure - Release".

------ WARNING! ------

Cylinders equipped with lock valves can remain pressurized for very long periods of time, even with the hoses removed.

Failure to relieve pressure before removing a lock valve or disassembling a cylinder can result in personal injury or death.

Ensure all pressure is relieved before removing a lock valve or disassembling a cylinder.

NOTICE

Care must be taken to ensure that fluids are contained during performance of inspection, maintenance, testing, adjusting, and repair of the product. Be prepared to collect the fluid with suitable containers before opening any compartment or disassembling any component containing fluids.

Refer to Special Publication, NENG2500, "Dealer Service Tool Catalog" for tools and supplies suitable to collect and contain fluids on Cat products.

Dispose of all fluids according to local regulations and mandates.

Note: Cleanliness is an important factor. Before the disassembly procedure, thoroughly clean the exterior of the component. In doing so will prevent dirt from entering the internal mechanism.

Note: Put identification marks on all hoses, on all hose assemblies, on all wires, and on all tube assemblies for installation purposes. Plug all hose assemblies and all tube assemblies to prevent fluid loss, and to keep contaminants from entering the system.

------ WARNING! ------

Cylinders equipped with lock valves can remain pressurized for very long periods of time, even with the hoses removed.

Ensure all pressure is relieved before removing a lock valve or disassembling a cylinder.

----------------------

------ WARNING! ------

When you are using hydraulic cylinders and puller studs, always ensure that the rated capacity of the puller stud meets or exceeds the rated capacity of the hydraulic cylinder. If the puller stud does not meet or exceed the rated capacity of the hydraulic cylinder, a sudden failure of the puller stud could occur. The sudden failure of the puller stud could result in personal injury or death.

Note: Threaded rods cannot be used with hydraulic cylinders as tooling.

(1) Use tooling (H) on threads.

(2) Put clean grease on the threads. Torque for the head ... 600 ± 130 N·m (440 ± 95 lb ft)

(3) Apply Tooling (D) to the wiper seal groove prior to assembly.

Use the lubricant that is being sealed in order to lubricate the sealing lips in the head.

Note: Cleanliness is an important factor. Before assembly, clean all parts in cleaning fluid. Allow the parts to air dry. Wiping cloths or rags should not be used to dry parts. Lint may be deposited on the parts which may cause later trouble. Inspect all parts. If any parts are worn or damaged, use new parts for replacement.
