  5. Remove bolt (13) and parking brake actuator lever (15).

  6. Remove brake camshaft (14).

  7. Remove nuts (12) and brake actuator mounting bracket (16).

Installation Procedure

Note: Clean all parts and inspect all parts. If any parts are worn or damaged, use new parts for replacement.

  1. Install brake actuator mounting bracket (16) and nuts (12).

  2. Install brake camshaft (14).

  3. Install parking brake actuator lever (15) and bolt (13). The torque for bolt (13) is 55 ± 10 N·m (40 ± 7 lb ft).

  4. Install plate assembly (11) and bolts (10). The torque for bolts (10) is 300 ± 40 N·m (220 ± 30 lb ft).

  5. Install brake shoes (9), brake adjuster (8), brake retainer spring (7), brace (6) and brake return springs (5).

  6. Install the brake drum and yoke assembly (4). Apply Loctite 271 to bolt (3). Tighten the bolt (3) to a torque of 120 ± 20 N·m (89 ± 15 lb ft).

  7. To adjust the parking brake, rotate the starwheel brake adjuster until the brake drum cannot be rotated by hand. Then, back off the starwheel brake adjuster by ten clicks.

  8. Move parking brake activation hand lever in cab to full down position.

  9. Pull down on clevis (2) in order to remove slack from cable link.

  10. Push the lever (15) lightly by hand upward to take slack out of system. Turn the clevis (2) up or down on the cable end until the bottom pin hole in the clevis is in line with the pin hole in the brake lever while lever is lightly pushed upward.

  11. Push pin (1) through clevis and lever. Tighten jam nut (1A). Install washer and cotter pin in pin.

  12. Apply the brake by moving the parking brake activation hand lever in cab to full position. Measure the clevis travel distance between "Brake-Released" and "Brake Applied". If the total stroke of the clevis exceeds 25 mm (0.98 inch) go to step 13. If the total stroke of the clevis is less than 15 mm (0.5906 inch), go to step 14. If the clevis stroke is within these limits, the brake adjustment is complete.

  13. With brake released, remove clevis pin and push lever by hand upward to verify holes line up with slack taken out. If holes are not aligned, readjust clevis according to steps 8, 9, 10, and 11. Recheck clevis stroke. With brakes still released, rotate the starwheel (8) to extend the shoes out to the drum, 2 clicks. Recheck clevis stroke, and repeat this process until stroke is less than 25 mm (0.98 inch). At that position brake shoes are allowed to slightly touch the drum, but not to drag.

  14. With brakes released, rotate the starwheel (8) to retract the shoes in from the drum, 2 clicks. Recheck clevis stroke, and repeat this process until stroke is greater than 15 mm (0.59 inch) and less than 25 mm (0.98 inch)

End By:

  1. Install the center drive shaft. Refer to Disassembly and Assembly, "Drive Shaft (Center) - Remove and Install".
