Rubber toric seals and all surfaces that contact the toric seals must be clean and dry when the parts are assembled. Apply a thin coat of oil on the contact surfaces of the metal seals prior to installing the metal seals. The metal seals must be assembled square with the bore. The rubber toric seals must not bulge and the rubber toric seals must not be twisted.

Start By:

  1. Remove the tires and rims.

  2. Remove the axle shaft.

  1. Attach Tooling (A) and a suitable lifting device to final drive (2). The weight of final drive (2) is approximately 136 kg (300 lb). Remove bolts (1).

  2. Use Tooling (B) to separate final drive (2). Remove final drive (2).

  3. Attach Tooling (D), Tooling (E), and Tooling (C) to wheel (3) in order to secure wheel (3). Attach a suitable lifting device to hub assembly (4). The combined weight of hub assembly (4) and ring gear (8) is approximately 159 kg (350 lb). Remove bolts (5), retainer (6), and shims (7). Remove hub assembly (4) with ring gear (8).

  4. Position hub assembly (4) and ring gear (8) onto suitable blocking. Attach a suitable lifting device and Tooling (E) to hub assembly (4). The weight of hub assembly (4) is approximately 68 kg (150 lb). Remove bolts (9). Remove hub assembly (4) from ring gear (8).

  5. Remove retainers (10) from ring gear (8).

  6. Remove bearing cone (11) from hub assembly (4).

  7. Attach Tooling (C), Tooling (D), and a suitable lifting device to wheel (3). The weight of wheel (3) is approximately 250 kg (550 lb). Remove Tooling (D) and Tooling (C) from the sides of wheel (3) and remove wheel (3).

  8. Remove bearing cups (12) and (13) from wheel (3). Remove Duo-Cone seal (14).

  9. Remove bearing cone (15) from spindle (17). Remove Duo-Cone seal (16).

  10. Repeat Step 1 through Step 9 for the opposite side.

Installation Procedure

  1. Install Duo-Cone seal (16) to spindle (17). Raise the temperature of bearing cone (15). Install bearing cone (15) to spindle (17).

  2. Lower the temperature of bearing cups (12) and (13). Install bearing cups (12) and (13) to wheel (3). Install Duo-Cone seal (14).

  3. Attach Tooling (C), Tooling (D), and a suitable lifting device to wheel (3) and position wheel (3). The weight of wheel (3) is approximately 250 kg (550 lb). Use Tooling (D) and Tooling (C) in order to secure wheel (3) to the machine.

  4. Position retainers (10) to ring gear (8).

  5. Raise the temperature of bearing cone (11) and install bearing cone (11) onto hub assembly (4).

  6. Attach a suitable lifting device and Tooling (E) to hub assembly (4). The weight of hub assembly (4) is approximately 68 kg (150 lb). Install hub assembly (4) into ring gear (8). Install bolts (9).

  7. For Final Drive and Wheel Gp 192-0822 proceed to Step 8 though Step 17. For Final Drive and Wheel Gp 378-6945 and 376-3729 proceed to Step 18 through Step 27

  8. Attach a suitable lifting device to hub assembly (4) and position hub assembly (4) and ring gear (8). The combined weight of hub assembly (4) and ring gear (8) is approximately 159 kg (350 lb).

  9. Use Tooling (F) in order to measure the thickness of retainer (6) at three Locations (X). Average the readings and record the measurement.

  10. Position retainer (6) without shims (7). Install bolts (5) with oil on the threads in the numeric sequence that is shown in Illustration 23. Tighten bolts (5) to a torque of 112 ± 18 N·m (83 ± 13 lb ft).

  11. Remove Tooling (D) from both sides of wheel (3). Remove the suitable lifting device from hub assembly (4). Rotate wheel (3) for one full revolution.

  12. Loosen bolts (5) slightly. Tighten bolts (5) according to the tightening sequence in Illustration 23. Tighten bolts (5) to a torque of 50 ± 9 N·m (37 ± 7 lb ft). Rotate wheel (3) for one full revolution.

  13. Use Tooling (G) in order to take three measurements at Locations (X). Average the readings and record the measurement.

  14. Subtract the measurement that was recorded in Step 9 from the measurement that was recorded in Step 13. Add 0.10 mm (0.004 inch) to this measurement. Record the measurement. This measurement is the total shim pack thickness that is required.

  15. Use Tooling (G) in order to measure the thickness of shims (7). The thickness of shims (7) must be within 0.025 mm (0.0010 inch) of the measurement that was recorded in Step 14.

  16. Attach a suitable lifting device to hub assembly (4). Attach Tooling (D), Tooling (C), and Tooling (E) to wheel (3) in order to secure wheel (3). Remove bolts (5) and retainer (6).

  17. Position shims (7) and retainer (6). Install bolts (5). Tighten bolts (5) to a torque of 530 ± 70 N·m (391 ± 52 lb ft).

  18. Attach a suitable lifting device to hub assembly (4) and position hub assembly (4) and ring gear (8). The combined weight of hub assembly (4) and ring gear (8) is approximately 159 kg (350 lb).

  19. Use Tooling (F) in order to measure the thickness of retainer (6) at three Locations (X). Average the readings and record the measurement.

  20. Position retainer (6) without shims (7). Install bolts (5) with oil on the threads in the numeric sequence that is shown in Illustration 23. Tighten bolts (5) to a torque of 90 ± 14 N·m (65 ± 7 lb ft).

  21. Remove Tooling (D) from both sides of wheel (3). Remove the suitable lifting device from hub assembly (4). Rotate wheel (3) for one full revolution.

  22. Loosen bolts (5) slightly. Tighten bolts (5) according to the tightening sequence in Illustration 23. Tighten bolts (5) to a torque of 40 ± 7 N·m (30 ± 5 lb ft) . Rotate wheel (3) for one full revolution.

  23. Use Tooling (G) in order to take three measurements at Locations (X). Average the readings and record the measurement.

  24. Subtract the measurement that was recorded in Step 19 from the measurement that was recorded in Step 23. Add 0.10 mm (0.004 inch) to this measurement. Record the measurement. This measurement is the total shim pack thickness that is required.

  25. Use Tooling (G) in order to measure the thickness of shims (7). The thickness of shims (7) must be within 0.025 mm (0.0010 inch) of the measurement that was recorded in Step 24.

  26. Attach a suitable lifting device to hub assembly (4). Attach Tooling (D), Tooling (C), and Tooling (E) to wheel (3) in order to secure wheel (3). Remove bolts (5) and retainer (6).

  27. Position shims (7) and retainer (6). Install bolts (5). Tighten bolts (5) to a torque of 125 ± 20 N·m (92 ± 15 lb ft) plus an additional angle of 120 ± 10 degrees.

  28. Attach Tooling (A) and a suitable lifting device to final drive (2) and position final drive (2). The weight of final drive (2) is approximately 136 kg (300 lb).

  29. Install bolts (1).

  30. Repeat Step 1 through Step 29 for the opposite side.

End By:

  1. Install the axle shafts.

  2. Install the tires and rims.
