Start By:

  1. Connect the steering frame lock.


NOTICE

Care must be taken to ensure that fluids are contained during performance of inspection, maintenance, testing, adjusting, and repair of the product. Be prepared to collect the fluid with suitable containers before opening any compartment or disassembling any component containing fluids.

Refer to Special Publication, NENG2500, "Dealer Service Tool Catalog" for tools and supplies suitable to collect and contain fluids on Cat products.

Dispose of all fluids according to local regulations and mandates.


  1. Drain the oil from the final drive. Refer to Operation and Maintenance Manual, "Differential and Final Drive Oil - Change" for the correct draining and filling procedure.

  2. Remove bolts (1) and cover (2).

  3. Remove O-ring seal (3).

  4. Install Tooling (A) to axle shaft (4). Use Tooling (A) in order to pull axle shaft (4) outward for approximately 762 mm (30.0 inch).

  5. Attach a suitable lifting device to axle shaft (4). Use Tooling (A) and the suitable lifting device to remove axle shaft (4). The weight of axle shaft (4) is approximately 68 kg (150 lb).

  6. Use Tooling (B) in order to remove retaining ring (5) from axle shaft (4).

  7. Remove sun gear (6) and spacer (7) from axle shaft (4).

  8. Repeat Step 1 through Step 7 for the remaining axle shafts.

Installation Procedure

  1. Install axle shaft (4) in the reverse order of removal.
