Installation Procedure

1. Attach a suitable lifting device to shaft assembly (11). Position shaft assembly (11) and install bolts (10) .

2. Install seal retainer (9) and clamps (8) .

3. Install Duo-Cone seal (6). Refer to Disassembly and Assembly, "Duo-Cone Conventional Seals - Install". Install bearing cone (7) .

4. Attach Tooling (A) and a suitable lifting device to housing assembly (2). Position housing assembly (2), and bearing cone (3), and retainer (5). Do not install the shims at this time. Install three of bolts (4) next to each of the small holes in retainer (5). Torque the three bolts (4) to a torque of 100 ± 15 N·m (74 ± 11 lb ft).

5. Rotate housing assembly (2) by several revolutions. Torque bolts (4) again to a torque of 100 ± 15 N·m (74 ± 11 lb ft). Rotate housing assembly (2) again.

6. Loosen three bolts (4) .

7. Tighten the three bolts (4) to a torque of 40 ± 5 N·m (30 ± 4 lb ft). Rotate housing assembly (2) by several revolutions. Continue the sequence of torquing and rotating until the torque of bolts (4) remains constant.

8. Install Tooling (B) in the three holes of the retainer (5). Measure the depth and record the measurement for each of the holes. Average these three numbers. Record the measurement as Measurement (X) .

9. Remove bolts (4) and retainer (5). Measure the thickness of retainer (5). Record the measurement as Measurement (Y) .

10. Use the following formula to calculate the thickness of Shims (Z) that are needed for correct bearing preload: Measurement X - Measurement Y + 0.1 mm = Z (Total Shim Thickness). Tolerance range for the shim pack is ± 0.025 mm (± 0.0010 inch).

11. Install the correct amount of shims that was calculated in Step 10. Install retainer (5) and bolts (4). Tighten bolts (4) to a torque of 150 ± 20 N·m (111 ± 15 lb ft).

12. Install cover (1). Fill the oil into the housing assembly.

End By: Install the brake calipers. Refer to Disassembly and Assembly, "Hydraulic Caliper Service Brake - Install".
