Schematic of the Fuel Level Sensor |
This diagnostic code is recorded when the ECM reads the signal from the buffer and the signal is too low.
- The buffer has failed.
- The sender has failed.
- The signal circuit is shorted to ground in the machine harness.
- The ECM has failed. This is unlikely.
System Response:
This failure causes the fuel gauge to always indicate that the fuel tank is empty. This failure causes the fuel gauge to intermittently indicate that the fuel tank is empty.
Test Step 1. CHECK THE BUFFER.
- Turn the disconnect switch and the key start switch to the ON position.
- Disconnect the machine harness from the buffer.
Expected Result:
The diagnostic code changes from CID 0096 FMI 04 to CID 0096 FMI 03.
Results:
- OK - The diagnostic code changes from CID 0096 FMI 04 to CID 0096 FMI 03. The buffer or the sender has failed.
Repair: Replace the buffer or the sender. Perform the Testing and Adjusting, "Pulse Width Modulated (PWM) Sensor - Test" section prior to replacing the buffer.
STOP
- NOT OK - The original diagnostic code of CID 0096 FMI 04 is still present. The buffer is not causing the diagnostic code. Proceed to test step 2.
Test Step 2. CHECK THE HARNESS.
- The buffer remains disconnected from the machine harness.
- Turn the key start switch and the disconnect switch to the OFF position.
- Disconnect the J1 and J2 machine harness connectors from the ECM.
- At the machine harness connector for the buffer, measure the resistance between the signal contact C (wire 447-PK(Pink)) and frame ground.
Expected Result:
The resistance is greater than 5000 ohms.
Results:
- OK - The resistance is greater than 5000 ohms.
Repair: The harness circuit resistance is correct. The ECM has failed. It is unlikely that the ECM has failed. Exit this procedure and perform this procedure again. If the cause of the diagnostic code is not found replace the ECM. See Testing and Adjusting, "Module - Replace".
STOP
- NOT OK - The resistance is less than 5000 ohms.
Repair: The machine harness has failed. There is a short between frame ground and the signal circuit in the machine harness. Repair the machine harness or replace the machine harness.
