Ethernet Data Link

The following is a list of Diagnostic Trouble Codes (DTCs) associated with the Ethernet data link of the machine.

Each Ethernet data link circuit is an input and output of select electronic control modules. The data link is designed to carry communications between the electronic control modules. The data link consists of internal control circuits and the connecting harness wiring.

The preceding diagram is a simplified schematic of the Ethernet connections that the Ethernet diagnostics are enabled for. The schematic is electrically correct. However, not all the possible harness connectors are shown. Refer to the latest revision of the Electrical Schematic to view the entire circuitry of the machine.

(1) This multimeter can use an RS232C cable to connect to a Laptop computer or Dataview tool gp for troubleshooting.

Prior to beginning this procedure, inspect the harness connectors involved in this circuit. Poor connections are often the cause of problems in an electrical circuit. Verify that all connections in the circuit are clean, secure, and in good condition. Check the wiring for pinch points or abrasions. If a wire issue is found with the Ethernet wiring, the wiring must be replaced not repaired. If a problem with a connection is found, correct the problem. Verify that the 5805 diagnostic code is active before performing this troubleshooting procedure.

  1. Identify the active FMI code associated with the Datalink fault.

  2. Use the list below to determine which procedure to follow.

  • FMI 2 diagnostic code, proceed to "FMI 2".

  • FMI 9 diagnostic code, proceed to "FMI 9".

2. Inspect all harness connections related to the CAN data link. Make sure that the connectors are clean and tight.

3. Check the connectors for proper mating. Ensure that all the seals are present and in place.

4. Check the harness for signs of damage or abrasion.

5. Check the wires at the connector. Ensure that the wires are secured tightly into the connector. Take care not to pull the wire out of the connector.

6. Check the exposed wires at the connectors for nicks or signs of abrasion.

7. Check for moisture inside the connector. 
The machine harness connectors are tight and free of corrosion.  Result: The machine harness connectors are tight and free of corrosion.

Proceed to "Verify The Hardware And The Software Part Numbers", Table 4.

Result: The machine harness connectors are in need of repair.

Repair: Repair or replace the machine harness.

Proceed to "Check If The Diagnostic Code Remains", Table 5.

The part number of the flash software for the ECM is correct.
The part number of the ECM is correct.
The part numbers of the sensors are correct.

Proceed to "Check If The Diagnostic Code Remains", Table 5.

Result: All the part numbers are not correct.

Repair: The ECM or the sensors have the wrong part number or incorrect flash software is installed. Flash the correct software or replace the incorrect ECM or the sensor with a module that has the correct part number. Refer to the "ECM Software - Install" section for additional information.

Proceed to "Check If The Diagnostic Code Remains", Table 5. 
(1) Consult your Technical Communicator for the correct part numbers of the flash software.

1. Reconnect all harness connectors. Return machine to normal operating condition.

2. Turn the start switch and the disconnect switch ON.

3. Clear all diagnostic codes.

4. Operate the machine.

5. Stop the machine and engage the safety.

6. Check if the diagnostic code is active. 
The diagnostic code is no longer present.  Result: The diagnostic code does not exist currently. The initial diagnostic code may have been caused by poor electrical connection or short at one of the harness connections. Resume machine operation.

STOP.

Result: The diagnostic trouble code has not been corrected. If the diagnostic code has not been corrected after performing the procedure a second time, the ECM may require replacement.

Prior to replacing the ECM, always contact the Technical Communicator at your dealership for possible consultation with AVSpare. This consultation may effect repair time.

Refer to the "ECM - Replace" section if the ECM needs to be replaced.

Identify Which Component Is Having Communication Problems

1. Use the System Communication Status screen in Cat ET to determine which component is having problems receiving communications from which other component.  System Communication Status identifies which Ethernet components are having problems communicating.  Result: Component is identified.

1. Turn the start switch and disconnect switch to the OFF position.

2. Inspect all harness connections related to the Ethernet Data Link between the component and the network manager. Make sure that the connectors are clean and tight.

3. Check the connectors for proper mating. Ensure that all the seals are present and in place.

4. Check the harness for signs of damage or abrasion.

5. Check the wires at the connector. Ensure that the wires are secured tightly into the connector.

6. Check the exposed wires at the connectors for nicks or signs of abrasion.

7. Check for moisture inside the connector.

8. Check that the data link wiring is not kinked and meets the bend radius requirement of 66 mm (2.6 inch) diameter or more. 
The machine harness connectors are tight and free of corrosion and the harness is not damaged externally.  Result: The machine harness connectors are tight and free of corrosion and the harness is not damaged externally.

Proceed to "Check For Short To Ground In the Data Link", Table 8.

Result: The machine harness or harness connectors are in need of repair.

Repair: Replace any damaged connectors or replace the damaged harness. Damaged harness must be replaced not repaired. The harness can be replaced or the Ethernet cable specifically can be replaced with a patch cable.

Check For Short To Ground In the Data Link

1. The start switch and disconnect switch remain in the OFF position.

2. Disconnect the machine harness connectors from all electronic control modules that use the suspect Ethernet data link.

3. At the connector of concern, measure the resistance between the frame ground and the positive terminal of the suspect Ethernet date link circuit.

4. At the connector of concern, measure the resistance between the frame ground and the negative terminal of the suspect Ethernet date link circuit. 
The reading is greater than 5K Ω.  Result: The harness circuit resistance is correct.

Proceed to "Check For A Short Between The Data Link Wires", Table 9.

Result: A reading is less than 5 Ω. The machine harness has failed.

Repair: There is a short between frame ground and the contacts of the Ethernet Data link circuit in the machine harness. Replace the harness or replace section of Ethernet cable requiring repair with the correct patch cable.

Note: A resistance greater than 5 Ω but less than 5K Ω may indicate a loose or a corroded connection in the circuit. A resistance measurement greater than 5K Ω indicates an open in the circuit.

1. The start switch and the disconnect switch remain in the OFF position.

2. With the suspect Ethernet datalink harness connectors disconnected from all electronic control modules, measure the continuity between the data link wires. 
The reading is greater than 5K Ω.  Result: The resistance measurement is correct.

Proceed to "Check For A Short To +Battery Circuit In The Data Link", Table 10.

Result: The resistance measurement is not correct. The wires for the data link are shorted together.

Repair: Replace the damaged harness. Damaged harness must be replaced not repaired. The harness can be replaced or the Ethernet cable specifically can be replaced with a patch cable.

Check For A Short To +Battery Circuit In The Data Link 
Troubleshooting Test Steps  Values  Results 
1. The start switch and disconnect switch remain in the OFF position.

2. All related modules remain disconnected from the Ethernet data link harness.

3. At the machine harness connector for the Machine ECM, measure the resistance between the connector contact for the +battery and the positive Ethernet connector contact.

4. At the machine harness connector for the Machine ECM, measure the resistance between the connector contact for the +battery and the negative Ethernet connector contact. 
The reading is greater than 5K Ω.  Result: The harness circuit resistance is correct.

Proceed to "Check If The Diagnostic Code Remains", Table 11.

Result: A reading is less than 5 Ω. The machine harness has failed.

Repair: There is a short between the +battery circuit and one of the Ethernet Data link circuits in the machine harness. Replace the damaged harness. Damaged harness must be replaced not repaired. The harness can be replaced or the Ethernet cable specifically can be replaced with a patch cable.

Note: A resistance greater than 5 Ω but less than 5K Ω indicates a loose or a corroded connection in the circuit. A resistance measurement greater than 5K Ω indicates an open in the circuit.

Proceed to "Verify The Software Part Numbers", Table 12.

Result: The diagnostic trouble code has not been corrected. If the diagnostic code has not been corrected after performing the procedure a second time, the ECM may require replacement.

Prior to replacing the ECM, always contact the Technical Communicator at your dealership for possible consultation with AVSpare. This consultation may effect repair time.

Refer to the "ECM - Replace" section if the ECM needs to be replaced.

1. Verify that the following information is correct:

-The part number of the flash software for the monitor is correct. 
All the part numbers are correct.  Result: The software part number is correct.

STOP.

Result: The monitor part number is not correct.

Repair: The monitor has the incorrect software installed. Flash the correct software. After flashing the software, wait 2 minutes. Then turn the push to start ring to the off position and the disconnect switch to the off position. Then turn the disconnect switch to the on position, and the push to start ring to the ON position.
Refer to the "ECM Software - Install" section for additional information.

STOP. 
(1) Consult your AVSpare Authorized Dealer for the correct part numbers of the flash software.
