1.1. False Detection Troubleshooting

False Detection Troubleshooting

These Object Detection System false detection troubleshooting instructions are intended to detect/identify mounting issues or radar performance issues due to external parameters. Refer to and read the "Effects on System Operation" section in Operation and Maintenance Manual, SEBU9054, "980M and 982M Wheel Loaders", "Cat Detect Object Detection".

Observe all relevant safety guidelines when troubleshooting False Detection or any issue.

  1. Move the machine to a leveled, open location that is away from other operating machines, any items, or personnel.

  2. Check the Cat® Electronic Technician (Cat ET) Service Tool configuration parameters for the Object Detection System. Ensure that the parameters are enabled and configured correctly.

    Radars will use a configuration code of "30" for radar part number 365-1271 Object Detection Sensor Gp.

    Radars will use a configuration code of "31" for radar part number 464-7684 Object Detection Sensor Gp.

    Radars will use a configuration code of "32" for radar part number 397-2994 Object Detection Sensor Gp.

    Radars on a given machine must be of a single part number for the system to work.

  3. Check SIS web for any update to the system software.

  4. Clean the radar covers to remove any dust or debris that may have accumulated.

  5. Check the radar locations and angles as specified in Special Instruction, SEHS0538, "Procedure to Install Cat Integrated Object Detection (CIOD) System On Certain L and M Series Medium Wheel Loaders".

  6. Adjust radars as needed to ensure that the radars are not catching the corner or edge of the counter weight.

  7. Check that the installation is tight and not allowed to drift downward from initial installation.

    Any angle changes due to loose installation and vibration during machine operation can cause the radar to see part of the machine or counterweight. These obstructions will cause intermittent false detections.

If none of the issues in Steps 1 through 7 are the source of the issue, exchange the right and left radars. Test to see if the false detect goes away.

If the issue persists, perform the following steps.

Note: Each test of the radars should be a dynamic test of the machine. Operate the machine in reverse at less than 10 km/h (6.2 mph) in an open area.

  1. Acquire two sheets of 24 GHz Radar Absorbing Material (RAM) 610 mm (24.0 inch) by 610 mm (24.0 inch) in size from an external supplier.

  2. Place one sheet of RAM horizontally below the right radar.

  3. Place the other sheet vertically, between the radar and the side of the counter weight.

  4. Operate the machine in reverse at less than 10 km/h (6.2 mph) in an open area to see if the issue persists.

    If the issue persists, repeat Steps 2 through 4 for the left radar.

If use of the RAM results in the false blockage not occurring, that radar is the source the issue. That radar can either be adjusted to the max allowable upward angle as shown in Special Instruction, SEHS0538, "Procedure to Install Cat Integrated Object Detection (CIOD) System On Certain L and M Series Medium Wheel Loaders" and tested again, or the radar in question can be replaced.

Note: If no RAM is available, a suitable alternative would be to use radars individually with a machine that does not have a false blockage issue. This process will allow the technician to determine if the machine has one or two faulty radars and how many radars to replace.
