Event codes alert the operator or the technician that an abnormal operating condition exists in one of the machine systems.

When the 53 ECM activates an event code, the operator or the technician will be alerted. Most active events will be logged by the ECM. Some events are not logged to the ECM. The active events and the logged events can be viewed with the Operator Monitor or the Cat® Electronic Technician (ET)

Warning Levels

The ECM assigns one of the three warning levels to an active event code according to the severity of the abnormal system condition. Each warning level requires a specific response from the operator. The warning levels and required operator response are listed below.

Warning Level 1

Warning Level 1 alerts the operator that a machine system requires attention. The operator should check the involved system. Perform any necessary maintenance to the system at the earliest possible time.

Warning Level 2

Warning Level 2 requires changing the operation of the machine or performing a maintenance procedure. Failure to correct the problem behind this warning will damage the components that are involved. The problem that caused the event requires correction, before the machine can resume operation.

Warning Level 3

Warning Level 3 requires an immediate safe shutdown of the machine to avoid damage to the machine or injury to personnel around the machine. The problem that caused the event must be corrected before machine operation can resume.

WARNING OPERATION
Warning Level  Warning Indications  Action by the operator is required.  Possible Result (1)
Warning Indicators for the Subsystem Warning Lamp  Sounding of the Action Alarm
ON  No Lamp  OFF  No immediate action is required. The system needs attention soon.  No harmful, damaging effects result.
ON  Solid Amber Action Lamp  OFF  Change machine operation or perform maintenance to the system.  The system components are damaged.
ON  Flashing Red Action Lamp  Pulse ON and OFF.  Immediately perform a safe engine shutdown.  The operator is injured or the components are damaged.

Cat ET

When an abnormal operating condition occurs, the status screen on the Operator Monitor or Cat ET indicates that there is an active event.

Event codes are displayed on Cat ET or the monitor in the following format:

EXXXX Description of the code

The "E" means that the code is an event code. The "XXXX" is a numeric identifier. The numeric identifier is followed by a description of the code.

Active event codes are listed in ascending numerical order. The code with the lowest number is listed first. The active event code is removed from the list when the condition is no longer present.

Logged Event Codes

Some event codes are logged in the ECM memory. Some event codes are active only. The logged event codes are listed in chronological order. The most recent code is listed first.

A logged code is cleared from memory when one of the following conditions occur:

  • The service technician manually clears the code.

  • The code does not reoccur for 1000 hours.

  • A new code is logged and there are already ten logged codes in memory. In this case, the oldest logged code is cleared.

Note: Always clear logged event codes after investigating and correcting the problem which generated the code.

Troubleshooting

Perform the following steps to troubleshoot an event:

  1. Obtain the following information from the operator monitor and the machine operator:

    • The event and the time of the event.

    • Determine the operating conditions for the engine at the time of the event. Conditions such as engine RPM and load may be important.

    • Determine if there are any systems that were installed by the dealer or by the customer that could cause the event.

  2. Some of the events below can become active during normal system operation. Verify that the event is not due to error of the operator.

  3. Check all fluid levels and all oil levels.

  4. Troubleshoot and repair any active diagnostic codes.

Power Train ECM Event Code List

Table 2
Event Codes for the Power Train ECM
EID (Level)  Description  Recommended Response/Possible Cause
E192 (3)  Steering System Malfunction  IMMEDIATE SAFE SHUTDOWN REQUIRED.
Possible Cause: - The ECM is not receiving signals from the Steering Control Handle position sensor.
- One of the Steering Pump solenoids has an active diagnostic code.
Limp Home Mode option will display when this Event is active.

Response: Check for active CID 1471, 1472, codes for steering sensors (both CIDs must be active to activate this Event).
Response: Check for active CID 0726 or CID 0727 codes for the right hand or left-hand steering pump solenoids.
Note: Refer to the troubleshooting procedures in Troubleshooting, M0120325, " " for active diagnostic codes and clear the active diagnostic code.
E256 (3)  Steering Output Detected in Wrong Direction  IMMEDIATE SAFE SHUTDOWN REQUIRED.
Possible Cause: The ECM detects the machine steering in the opposite direction of the steering command.
Limp Home Mode option will display when this Event is active.

Response: Usually occurs after service to steering system components as a result of component either wired in reverse or hydraulic lines connected in reverse.
Response: Check for and clear any active CID 1469 or CID 1470 diagnostic codes for the steering motor speed sensor input signal circuits.
Response: Check the following components for correct wire connections:
- LH and RH steer solenoids, the two steer speed sensor signal circuits.
Response: Check the following hydraulic components for correct connections and operation:
- Steering pump hydraulic connections.
- Steering pump operation.
- COR valve operation.
Note: Refer to the troubleshooting procedures in Troubleshooting, M0120325, " " for active diagnostic codes and clear the active diagnostic code.
E257 (3)  Steering Output Detected with No Command Given  IMMEDIATE SAFE SHUTDOWN REQUIRED.
Possible Cause: A problem exists in the hydraulic system. The hydraulic fluid is too cool.
The steering motor speed sensor is indicating steering motor movement to the ECM when the Direction Control is in the NEUTRAL position.

Response: Limp Home Mode is activated when the Event is active.
Response: Warm the machine and the hydraulic fluid before operating the machine.
Response: Check for pump stroking without command.
Response: Check the pump solenoid valves for being stuck in closed position.
Response: Check for internal hydraulic leakage in the steer motor.
E258 (3)  No Steering Detected with Command Given  IMMEDIATE SAFE SHUTDOWN REQUIRED.
Possible Cause: The steering motor speed sensor is not indicating steering motor movement to the ECM when steering is commanded.

Response: Limp Home Mode is activated when the Event is active.
Response: Clear any active CID 1469 or CID 1470 diagnostic codes for the steering motor speed sensor input signal circuits.
Response: Check the mounting of the steering motor speed sensor.
Response: Check the hydraulic system for:
- Pump solenoid valves for being stuck in closed position.
- Internal hydraulic leakage in the steer motor.
- COR valve stuck open.
Response: Steer pump failure.
Note: Refer to the troubleshooting procedures in Troubleshooting, M0120325, " " for active diagnostic codes and clear the active diagnostic code.

Implement ECM Event Code List

The following table lists the event codes that apply to the control system. The recommended response is listed. Use the Cat ET to determine the event codes that are active or logged.

Table 3
Event Codes for the Implement ECM
EID
(Level)
Description  Possible Cause and Recommended Response
E861 (1)  Clock Manual Alignment Required  Possible Cause: The ECM internal clock is too far out of alignment with the other control module clocks on the machine.

Recommended Action: Use Cat ET to align the clock with the other control modules manually.

Information Display Event Code List

The following table lists the event codes that apply to the information display of the machine. The recommended response is listed. Use the Cat ET to determine the event codes that are active or logged.

Table 4
Machine ECM Event Identifier (EID) Codes
EID (Level)  Description  Recommended Response/Possible Cause
E1378 (2)  High ECM Power Input Voltage  Possible Cause: Event is active when the system voltage exceeds 32 VDC for more than 60 seconds.

Recommended Response: The machine returns to normal operation when the voltage is less than 32 VDC for more than 2 seconds.
E1379 (2)  Low ECM Power Input Voltage  Possible Cause: Event is active when the system voltage is less than 9 VDC for more than 60 seconds.

Recommended Action: The machine returns to normal operation when the voltage exceeds 9 VDC for more than 2 seconds.
