Using Cat® Electronic Technician (ET) l to Determine Diagnostic Codes

Perform the following steps to use Cat ET to determine diagnostic codes:

  1. Connect Cat ET to the machine.

  2. Turn the keyswitch on.

  3. Start Cat ET.

    Cat ET will initiate communication with the electronic control modules (ECMs) on the machine. After communication has been established, Cat ET will list the ECMs.

  4. Select the desired ECM.

  5. After the diagnostic codes have been determined with Cat ET, see the test procedure for the desired diagnostic code.

Active Diagnostic Codes

Cat ET has an "Active Diagnostic Code" screen. The "Active Diagnostic Code" screen shows component identifier (CID), failure mode identifier (FMI), and text description of the problem.

The following procedures may cause new diagnostic codes to be logged. Therefore, before any procedures are performed, make a list of all the active diagnostic codes. Perform the desired procedure. Clear any diagnostic codes caused by the procedure.

Note: Before performing a procedure, always check all the circuit breakers. Repair the cause of any circuit breaker that is tripped.

Logged Diagnostic Codes

Cat ET has a "Logged Diagnostic Code" screen. On the "Logged Diagnostic Code" screen, Cat ET will log diagnostic codes that are intermittent. The logged diagnostic data includes component identifier (CID), failure mode identifier (FMI), and a text description of the problem. Also, the logged diagnostic data includes the number of occurrences of the problem and two time stamps. The time stamps display the first occurrence and the most recent occurrence of the problem.

Diagnostics are logged in non-volatile memory. On power-up, the ECM will clear any diagnostic codes that have not been detected or active within the last 1000 hours of machine operation.

Note: The Alert Reminder Lamp (6) is visible when a Level 2 Diagnostic Code is active. Pressing the icon will enlarge a Pop-Up Message Warning Banner.

  1. Press the "Diagnostics" button (5). The "Diagnostics" page will appear.

The Diagnostics Page contains a list consisting of the following columns:

  • Code: A diagnostic code or an event fault code reference number.

  • Description: A description of the fault code.

  • Active: An "X" indicates that the faulty code is active. A blank space indicates that the fault code is not active.

The Diagnostics page in Illustration 4 is shown with "No active or logged diagnostics present".

If there is no Alert Reminder Lamp (6) visible in the Warning Banner, the "Diagnostics" page will show a message telling the operator that "No active or logged diagnostics are present".

  1. Press the intended button in the Diagnostic/Event Description Button Group. The Diagnostics/Events Detail page will appear with additional information.

  2. Press the Back button (2) to return to the previous page.

  3. Press the Home button (4) to return to the previous page.

    Note: If a Diagnostic Code is Active, a Pop-Up Warning Message is Active, the Pop-Up Fault Warning Message Banner (8) will appear in the Message Window.

    For more information refer to the "Pop-Up Messages" section in this manual.

    Note: If more than 5 buttons appear in the Diagnostic/Event Description Button Group (7), a Scroll Bar (3) with a Sliding Indicator will appear on the page. Press the Up Arrow button or the Down Arrow button to scroll up and down the button list.

  4. Pressing the intended Diagnostic button (Example: 247-9) as shown in Illustration 6 will cause the Diagnostic/Event Detail page to appear. This page provides detailed information on the selected code from the Diagnostics page.

  5. Press the Back button (2) to return to the previous page.

  6. Press the Home button (4) to return to the Home Page (Performance Page).
