C3.4B Engines DEF Concentration Is Incorrect Caterpillar

DEF Concentration Is Incorrect
`

Use this procedure to troubleshoot the following codes:

Note: Refer to Troubleshooting, "Service Tool Features" for more information about service features.

Table 1
Diagnostic Trouble Codes for DEF Concentration Is Incorrect
J1939 Code  Description  Notes
3516-2  Aftertreatment #1 DEF Concentration : Erratic, Intermittent, or Incorrect  The Electronic Control Module (ECM) detects that the concentration of the Diesel Exhaust Fluid (DEF) is outside of the acceptable range for at least 10 minutes.
The battery voltage is at least 9 V.
The DEF tank temperature is between 20° C (68° F) and 40° C (104° F).
The DEF quality lamp will come on.
3516-14  Aftertreatment #1 DEF Concentration : Special Instruction  The ECM detects that the fluid in the DEF tank is not DEF.
The fault is detected for at least 5 minutes.
The battery voltage is at least 9 V.
The DEF tank temperature is between 20° C (68° F) and 40° C (104° F).
The warning lamp will flash.
Follow the troubleshooting procedure in order to identify the root cause of the fault.

Note: The procedures have been listed in order of probability. Complete the procedure in the order in which the steps are listed.

Table 3
Troubleshooting Test Steps  Values  Results

1. Check for Diagnostic Codes Active or Logged Diagnostic codes.

A. Establish communication between the electronic service tool and the Electronic Control Module (ECM). Refer to Troubleshooting, "Electronic Service Tools", if necessary.

Diagnostic Active or Logged codes
Result: A diagnostic code is active or logged other than a 3516-2 or 3516-14 code.

Repair: Troubleshoot the active or logged code.

Result: A 3516-2 or 3516-14 diagnostic code is active or logged.

Proceed to Test Step 2.

2. Check the DEF Quality

A. Use a 431-7087 Refractometer to measure the Diesel Exhaust Fluid (DEF) quality.

Refer to Testing and Adjusting, "Diesel Exhaust Fluid Quality - Test" for the correct procedure.

DEF quality standards

Result: DEF quality is not within the acceptable range.

Repair: Flush the DEF tank. Refer to Operation and Maintenance Manual, "Diesel Exhaust Fluid Tank - Flush". Refill the tank with DEF that meets ISO 22241 quality standards. Refer to Operation and Maintenance Manual, "Diesel Exhaust Fluid - Fill".

Result: DEF quality is within the acceptable range.

Repair: Repair the DEF Tank header sensor with the DEF Manifold Sensor Kit. Refer to Disassembly and Assembly, Manifold (DEF Heater) Sensor - Disassemble (Temperature, Level, Quality DEF Manifold Sensor) and Manifold (DEF Heater) Sensor - Assemble (Temperature, Level, Quality DEF Manifold Sensor).

Repeat this procedure from Test Step 1.
