Schematic for the Position Sensor (Tilt Linkage)

This diagnostic code is recorded when the ECM records an erratic signal or an intermittent signal from the rotary position sensor for the tilt linkage. There could also be a short to the +battery circuit, a short to ground, or an open circuit. The rotary position sensor is a PWM sensor. The signal wire for the rotary position sensor connects to connector contact J2-14 (wire 762-YL) of the ECM.

The possible causes for this diagnostic code are listed:

  • The signal circuit is open.

  • The +battery circuit from the electrical system to the sensor is open.

  • The signal circuit is shorted to the +battery circuit.

  • The signal circuit is shorted to ground.

  • The rotary position sensor for the tilt linkage has been rotated past the allowable range. The sensor is not adjusted properly.

System Response:

The machine response is listed:

  • The kickouts will not function properly.

  • The implements will function slowly.

  • Snubbing of the tilt cylinder will not function.

  • The calibration procedure for the implement valves may not function properly.

  • Full Rack Angle Control will not function properly.

Note: Ensure that CID 0351 FMI 02 is active and that the diagnostic code indicator is active.

Test Step 1. CHECK THE ECM AND THE HARNESS.

  1. Turn the disconnect switch and the key start switch to the ON position.

  1. Disconnect the harness from the sensor.

  1. At the harness connector for the sensor, measure the voltage between contact A (wire 146-GY) and contact B (wire 299-BK).

    Note: Disconnecting the rotary position sensor for more than five seconds resets the calibration for the rotary position sensor. The rotary position sensor must be recalibrated when testing is completed.

Expected Result:

The voltage measures approximately 24 DCV.

Results:

  • YES - The voltage measures approximately 24 DCV. Proceed to test step 2.

  • NO - The voltage does NOT measure battery voltage. The ECM has failed or the harness has failed. Proceed to Test Step 5.

Test Step 2. CHECK THE ECM AND THE HARNESS.

  1. The harness remains disconnected from the sensor.

  1. At the harness connector for the sensor, measure the voltage between signal contact C (wire 762-YL) and ground contact B (wire 299-BK).

Expected Result:

The voltage measures 5.0 ± 0.5 DCV.

Results:

  • YES - The voltage measures 5.0 ± 0.5 DCV. The harness is correct.

    Repair: Replace the sensor.

    STOP

  • NO - The voltage is above 5.0 ± 0.5 DCV. The ECM has failed or the harness has failed. Proceed to Test Step 3.

  • NO - The voltage is below 5.0 ± 0.5 DCV. The ECM has failed or the harness has failed. Proceed to Test Step 4.

Test Step 3. CHECK FOR A SHORTED HARNESS.

  1. The sensor remains disconnected.

  1. Turn the key start switch and the disconnect switch to the OFF position.

  1. Disconnect the harness connectors (J1, J2) from the ECM.

  1. At the harness connectors for the ECM (J1, J2), measure the resistance between contact J2-14 (wire 762-YL) and ALL other J1 & J2 connector contacts.

Expected Result:

The resistance is greater than 5000 Ohms.

Results:

  • YES - The resistance is greater than 5000 Ohms. The harness resistance is correct.

    Repair: It is unlikely that the ECM has failed. Exit this procedure and perform this troubleshooting procedure again. If the diagnostic code is not found replace the ECM. See Testing and Adjusting, "Electronic Control Module (ECM) - Replace".

    STOP

  • NO - Resistance is less than 5000 Ohms.

    Repair: The harness has failed. There is a short between J2-14 (wire 762-YL) and another wire. Repair the harness or replace the harness.

    STOP

Test Step 4. CHECK THE HARNESS CIRCUIT.

  1. The sensor remains disconnected from the harness.

  1. The key start switch and the disconnect switch remain in the OFF position.

  1. At the harness connector for the sensor, place a jumper wire between contact B (wire 299-BK) and contact C (wire 762-YL).

  1. Disconnect the harness connectors (J1, J2) from the ECM.

  1. At the harness connector for the ECM, measure the resistance between contact J2-14 (wire 762-YL) and frame ground.

Expected Result:

The resistance is less than 5000 Ohms.

Results:

  • YES - The resistance is less than 5000 Ohms.

    Repair: The harness resistance is correct. It is unlikely that the ECM has failed. Exit this procedure and perform this troubleshooting procedure again. If the diagnostic code is not found replace the ECM. See Testing and Adjusting, "Electronic Control Module (ECM) - Replace".

    STOP

  • NO - Resistance is greater than 5000 Ohms.

    Repair: The harness has failed. Repair the harness or replace the harness.

    STOP

Test Step 5. CHECK FOR A OPEN HARNESS.

  1. Turn the disconnect switch and the key start switch to the ON position.

  1. The sensor remains disconnected from the harness.

  1. At the harness connector for the sensor, measure the voltage between contact A (wire 146-GY) and frame ground.

Expected Result:

The voltage is approximately battery voltage.

Results:

  • YES - The voltage is approximately battery voltage.

    Repair: The battery circuit is correct. The ground wire 299-BK has failed. Repair the harness or replace the harness.

    STOP

  • NO - The voltage is less than battery voltage.

    Repair: The battery wire 146-GY has failed or the fuse has failed. Repair the harness or replace the harness.

    STOP
