Starting the Universal Total Station (UTS) System
Complete the following steps in order to start the UTS instrument and in order to connect the UTS instrument to the system.
- From any guidance screen, press "UTS".
The "UTS start-up" dialog appears. The dialog below is used to start an SPS730 or SPS930 instrument.
- For SPS730 and SPS930 instruments only, set the "Target ID".
Complete the following steps in order to set the "Target ID".
- Press the "Target ID" soft key.
The "MT900 Target ID" dialog will appear.
- Enter the selected "Target ID" into the "Target ID:" field.
By convention, Target IDs with values from 9 through 16 are used for machine control applications. Target IDs with values from 1 through 8 are reserved for surveying applications. Ask your site manager which Target ID you should use. To set the default value of 9, press the "Default" soft key.

Note: The state of the power supply for the SPS730 or the SPS930 is automatically measured and displayed in the "UTS Battery" field. If an external battery is used in order to power the instrument, the instrument battery status is not available.
UTS Set Up Problems
Common UTS Set Up Problems     | |
Problem     | Action     |
No "Start" softkey in UTS dialog.     | The machine data radio has not synchronized with the UTS instrument data radio. Run the system diagnostics in order to check that the UTS components are connected and are operating properly. Ensure that the UTS instrument data radio is turned on. Ensure that the instrument battery in operating properly.     |
The UTS fails to start.     | Ask your site manager to check that the radio channel, and network if applicable, are compatible with the instrument radio. Run the system diagnostics in order to check that the UTS components are connected and are operating properly.     |
Reacquire UTS Lock
If the UTS loses the lock on the target while you are working, the "No UTS Data" message flashes on the guidance screen. Complete the following steps in order to reacquire the lock on the target.
- Stop the machine as soon as safely possible, in clear view, and within 15.0 m (50.0 ft) to 300 m (1000 ft) of the UTS.
Note: The target must be within the search window defined during UTS set up, otherwise you will be unable to acquire lock.
- If "Auto Search" is enabled, then wait for the UTS to reacquire a lock on the target. Otherwise, from any guidance screen, press "UTS".
The "UTS" dialog will appear.
Use one or more of the following tools in order to reacquire a lock on the target.
- To initiate a search of the entire search window, press "Search".
- To initiate a search of an area of the search window within 20.0 m (66.0 ft) horizontally and 10.0 m (33.0 ft) vertically of your last known position, press "Quick Search".
- To initiate a search of the entire search window, press "Search".
