1.1. Machine Preparation for Troubleshooting
2.1. Isolation and Drift Test

------ WARNING! ------

Sudden movement or accidental starting of the machine can cause personal injury or death to persons on or near the machine.

To prevent personal injury or death, perform the following:

Park the machine on a smooth, level surface.

Lower the work tool to the ground and engage the parking brake.

Stop the engine and remove the key.

Block the wheels and install the steering frame lock.

------ WARNING! ------

Personal injury or death can result from sudden movement of the lift cylinders or the tilt cylinders. Do not stand under the work tool when you are testing or adjusting the lift cylinders or the tilt cylinders.

Do not stand under the lift arms when you are testing or adjusting the lift cylinders or the tilt cylinders.

NOTICE

Care must be taken to ensure that fluids are contained during performance of inspection, maintenance, testing, adjusting and repair of the product. Be prepared to collect the fluid with suitable containers before opening any compartment or disassembling any component containing fluids.

Refer to Special Publication, NENG2500, "AVSpare Dealer Service Tool Catalog" for tools and supplies suitable to collect and contain fluids on AVSpare products.

Dispose of all fluids according to local regulations and mandates.

The ride control valve can be the cause of excessive lift cylinder drift. This procedure will isolate the ride control valve in the hydraulic system and the procedure will check for lift cylinder drift.

Machine Preparation for Troubleshooting

  1. Park the machine on a smooth, level surface. Move away from working machines and personnel. Lower the work tools to the ground.

  2. Allow only one operator on the machine. Keep all personnel away from the machine or in the view of the operator.

  3. Engage the parking brake.

  4. Place the steering frame lock in the LOCKED position.

Reference: For more information about preparing the machine for troubleshooting, refer to the Service Manual module Testing and Adjusting, "Machine Preparation for Troubleshooting" for the machine that is being serviced.

Isolation and Drift Test

  1. Make sure that the hydraulic oil pressure is relieved from the hydraulic system by completing the procedure that is specified in the Service Manual module Testing and Adjusting, "System Pressure - Release" for the machine that is being serviced.

  2. Release the pressure in the ride control system. Do not start the engine. Turn the key start switch to the ON position and move the ride control switch to the ON position. Move the hydraulic control levers to all positions in order to release the pressure in the hydraulic system. Place the lift control lever in the FLOAT position. Place the tilt control lever in the HOLD position.

  3. Turn the key start switch to the OFF position.

    (4) Return line. (5) Hose assembly.

  4. Remove hose assembly (5). Install Tooling (A) in the end of hose assembly (5). Install Tooling (B) on the elbow that was connected to hose assembly (5).

  5. Loosen upper connection (3) of tube assembly (2). Remove return line (4) from the oil return line to the manifold (1). Install Tooling A in the end of the return line (4). Install Tooling B on the elbow that was attached to return line (4). Tighten connection (3).

Note: Lower connection (4) is part of tube assembly (2).

  6. Start the engine and run the engine at high idle. Warm the hydraulic oil to normal operating temperature between 49 to 65°C (120 to 150°F).

  7. Raise the lift arms.

  8. Place the lift control lever in the HOLD position and turn the engine start switch to the OFF position.

  9. Measure the distance of rod movement in one minute. Refer to Table 2 for the maximum drift.

    Table 2
Maximum Drift For The Lift Cylinders
Oil Temperature  Maximum Drift  Time (Minutes)
    38 °C (100 °F)
    to
    50 °C (122 °F)
    14 mm (0.55 inch)
    50 °C (122 °F)
    to
    65 °C (149 °F)
    14 mm (0.55 inch)  2.7
    Above
    65 °C (149 °F)
    14 mm (0.55 inch)  1.7

  10. If the drift is eliminated or the drift is reduced, inspect the ride control valve. Check for scoring in the stem for the diverter valve and the bore inside the diverter valve. Check for O-rings that are worn or damaged on the solenoid valve.

  11. Start the engine and lower the work tool to the ground.

  12. Turn the engine start switch to the OFF position.

  13. When the testing is complete, release the pressure in the hydraulic system. Remove tooling A and tooling B from the ride control diverter valve. Connect tube assembly (2) and the hose assembly (5).
