Hydraulic oil pressure can remain in the hydraulic system on this machine after the engine and pump have been stopped. Serious injury can result if this pressure is not released before any service is done on the hydraulic systems. In order to prevent possible injury, release the hydraulic system pressure before working on any fitting, hose, or hydraulic component. Lower all attachments to the ground before service is started. If the hydraulic system must be serviced, tested, or adjusted with the attachment in the raised position, the attachments and lift cylinders must be supported properly. Always move the machine to a location away from the travel of other machines. Be sure that other personnel are not near the machine when the engine is running and tests or adjustments are being made. |
NOTICE |
---|
Care must be taken to ensure that fluids are contained during performance of inspection, maintenance, testing, adjusting, and repair of the machine. Be prepared to collect the fluid with suitable containers before opening any compartment or disassembling any component containing fluids. Dispose of all fluids according to local regulations and mandates. |

(1) | Recreating factory pressure test conditions for the fan pump in the tractor is difficult. The preferred method for measuring the pump pressure is testing the fan speed. For more information about pressures and currents, refer to Specifications Systems Operation Testing and Adjusting, "Piston Pump (Fan Drive)" specification. |
(2) | Early Tier 4i machines had a minimum factory setting of 300-700 RPM. If any service is performed on the cooling system, adjust the minimum fan speed to the new value listed above. |
Reference: Refer to each specific section for an introduction to the test, adjustment, and calibration procedures.

Fan Speed Correction Factor Calculation
This procedure is used to correct the factory maximum, minimum and clip speed targets. These corrections are for the ambient air pressure and temperature in which the machine is being serviced.
The fan speeds can be found in Table 1.
- Perform the steps in the "Machine Set Up" and then continue to the following steps.
- Connect the Electronic Technician to the diagnostic port on the tractor.
- Click the "Status" tab in Electronic Technician.
- Choose "Engine Pressures". Record the atmospheric pressure, this value will be used later in the procedure.
- Record the ambient temperature displayed under "Engine Temperatures". The approximate ambient air temperature will be used later in the procedure.
- Use the atmospheric pressure and the ambient air temperature noted in Step 4 and Step 5 in Table 4. This table identifies the correct factor for current location and ambient conditions.
Reference: The fan speed correction factor table is located in table 4.
- Record this correction factor in Table 1.
- To get a corrected fan speed, multiply the fan speed from Table 1 by the correction factor recorded in Table 1.
Reference: See Table 3 for an example.
Show/hide tableTable 3 Example D6T with a 30 degree standard 246-0616 Fan Spider As Target clip speed from Table 1 is 1550 RPM. Ambient temperature of 20° C (68 ° F) Atmospheric pressure of 95 kPa (13.78 psi) The recorded correction factor from Table 1 is 1.02. The corrected target clip speed is: 1550 RPM × 1.02 = 1550 ± 50 - Perform the steps in the "Fan Speed Calibration" using the new corrected fan speed instead of the default value stated in ET.
This procedure utilizes the "Engine Cooling Fan Calibration" tool in Electronic Technician (ET) to drive 0.02 Amps and 1.6 Amps. These specific currents are driven to verify that the "Maximum Mechanical High Pressure" and "Minimum Mechanical Pressure" pump adjustments are properly set. This test also ensures that a successful fan speed calibration can be performed.
- Assemble tooling (D).
- Attach tooling (D) to the grill to measure the fan speed.
- Connect Electronic Technician (ET) to the diagnostic port on the tractor.
- Engage the parking brake.
- Start the engine. Warm the hydraulic oil to a temperature of
60° ± 3°C (140° ± 5°F) . Run the engine for at least 5 minutes to stabilize the air temperature. - Set the implement lockout switch to the LOCKED position.
- Use Electronic Technician for the following procedure:
- Select the Engine ECM.
- Click the Service tab.

The "Fan Speed Calibration" procedure is used to set the fan current working range to be utilized during normal fan system operation.
Note: The "Fan Speed Bypass" tool in ET allows for manual control of fan speed within the calibrated fan speed working range while ET is in use. The "Fan Speed Bypass" tool is not used to evaluate the "Maximum Mechanical High Pressure" or "Minimum Mechanical Pressure" settings of the pump. This tool will not drive the fan control current to the level needed to conduct these evaluations properly.
