Introduction
The tool group and seating procedure has been developed to provide improved seating of injector cones in cylinder head brass sleeves. The tool is designed for 3114, 3116, or 3126 MUI Engines and 3116 or 3126 HEUI 2-Valve Engine injectors. There is a separate procedure for both the MUI and HEUI engines. The procedures can be done with the rocker arms removed and the intake manifold on the head. They can also be used with both the rocker arms and intake manifold removed.
These procedures assumes that new sleeves have been installed, but NOT reamed, or existing sleeves have been inspected for pitting or carbon tracking and reamed for clean up, if required.

MUI Engine Procedure
This procedure can be used for 3114, 3116, and 3126 MUI Engines.
1. Install a new injector brass sleeve or inspect and ream the existing sleeves as outlined in Tool Operating Manual NEHS0675. It is not necessary to ream new sleeves when using this procedure.
2. Install the unit injector and align the rack bar. Do not use the small O-ring on the injector tip.
3. Install holding clamp bolt (12) and tighten to 12 ± 3 N·m, 1.2 ± 0.3 meter kg, (9 ± 2 lb. ft.).
Illustration 2. Install Holding Clamp Bolt (12).
4. Remove inlet manifold bolt (13) closest to the injector.
NOTICE |
---|
For a repair procedure, remove only one manifold bolt at a time. Removing all the manifold bolts could weaken or damage the manifold/head gasket material. |
Illustration 3. Remove Inlet Manifold Bolt (13).
5. Install MUI injector forcing cover (7) over the injector. The milled surface should line up with injector clamp bolt. The two long flat surfaces are for valve spring clearance. Refer to the "MUI Tooling" section for a warning on the sharp edges of this tool.
NOTICE |
---|
Make sure the slots of injector forcing cover (7) are free of nicks, scratches, or burrs. Damage in the slots will result in damage to the injector spring. |
Illustration 4. Install Injector Forcing Cover.
Illustration 5. MUI Injector Forcing Cover Properly Installed.
6. If assembled, back out forcing bolt (4) in forcing bridge (1) to provide clearance between the injector forcing cover and forcing bridge.
7. Place a small amount of 4C-5591 Thread Lubricant on top of the injector forcing cover's wear button (10) and on the threads of forcing bolt (4).
NOTICE |
---|
Complete lubrication of the wear button and forcing bolt must be maintained for each injector seating procedure. Failure to relubricate each part before seating the next injector may cause premature wear or tool damage. Also, make sure the forcing bolt turns freely and does not have any damaged threads. |
8. Install the forcing bridge with three 7X-0457 Bolts (5) and three 9M-1974 Hard Washers (6). Put the two long legs of the forcing bridge in the two rocker arm shaft support holes closest to the injector. The short leg of the forcing bridge with spacer (2) installed sits on the intake manifold bolt boss. [The long spacer (3) is used when the manifold is not installed.]
Illustration 6. Install Forcing Bridge.
NOTICE |
---|
Do not install the injectors "off-engine" because the injector tip will protrude from the head and be subject to damage. If the injectors are installed off-engine, make sure the bottom surface of the head is raised off the surface of the work bench. |
9. Tighten forcing bridge mounting bolts (5) to 28 ± 7 N·m, 2.9 ± 0.7 meter kg, (21 ± 5 lb. ft.).
NOTICE |
---|
Damage to the head could occur if bridge mounting bolts (5) are not tightened to the specified torque. |
Illustration 7. Install Forcing Bolt (4).
10. Tighten the forcing bolt finger tight.
11. Use a 9U-5019 Torque Wrench (14) and tighten the forcing bolt to 34 ± 1.4 N·m, 3.5 ± 0.1 meter kg, (25 ± 1 lb. ft.). Wait five seconds and retorque the bolt to 34 ± 1.4 N·m, 3.5 ± 0.1 meter kg, (25 ± 1 lb.ft.).
Illustration 8. Tighten Forcing Bolt (4) With 9U-5019 Torque Wrench (14).
12. Loosen forcing bolt (4).
13. Remove forcing bridge (1).
14. Remove injector forcing cover (7).
Do not retighten injector clamp bolt (12) until after forcing bolt (4) and forcing bridge (1) have been removed. That bolt head can break off due to overtightening, if this procedure is not followed. |
15. Retighten the injector clamp bolt (12) to 12 ± 3 N·m, 1.2 ± 0.3 meter kg, (9 ± 2 lb. ft.) because the coining procedure will have reduced the torque on the bolt.
Illustration 9. Retighten Clamp Bolt (12).
16. If the intake manifold was not removed, install and tighten the inlet manifold bolt to 28 ± 7 N·m, 2.9 ± 0.7 meter kg (21 ± 5 lb. ft.)
17. Repeat Steps 1 through 16 for the remaining cylinders.
18. Check / set the injector synchronization.
19. Install the rocker arms and the intake manifold, if removed. Check / set the valve lash and timing.
MUI Tooling
The injector forcing cover (7) has two sharp edges due to the design of this tool. Be very careful not to cut yourself on these sharp edges. (Refer to Illustration 10.) |
Illustration 10. Be Careful Of Sharp Edges Indicated By Arrows.
The injector forcing cover was designed not to damage the injector clamp at the points of contact, as indicated by the arrows in Illustration 11. In order to do this, the material in the forcing cover is softer than the material in the injector clamp. As the tool is used, two legs (indicated by arrows in Illustration 12) may begin to round over. Keep this area free from burrs and replace this tool if the wear becomes extensive.

Illustration 12. Wear Can Begin At Two Points Indicated By Arrows.
HEUI Engine Procedure
This procedure is for 3116 and 3126 HEUI 2-Valve engines. Make sure a clean work environment is maintained throughout this entire procedure.
NOTICE |
---|
If doing an on-engine procedure, remove only one manifold bolt at a time. Removing more than one could weaken the manifold/head joint gasket material. |
1. If necessary, remove the injector clamp bolt and clamp.

2. Remove jumper tube by removing two socket head cap screws on one end and loosening the tube nut on the other end. Refer to Illustrations 2 and 3.
Illustration 2. Remove Two Cap Screws.
Illustration 3. Loosen Tube Nut.
NOTICE |
---|
Make sure the small seat, shown in Illustration 4, is removed. Do not allow the seat to fall into any engine cavity, which could result in damage if unintentionally left inside the engine. Also, make sure the jumper tube is kept clean at all times. Dirt or other debris can get into the engine with this tube removed and cause possible damage. |

16. Install manifold bolt and tighten to 28 ± 7 N·m, 2.9 ± 0.7 meter kg, (21 ± 5 lb.ft.).
17. Install a new O-ring, seat, jumper tube, and injector clamp according to the instructions in the appropriate Service Manual. Make sure the seat is not accidentally dropped into any engine cavity.
18. Repeat the procedure for the remaining cylinders.
19. Recheck the torque on the bolts in Steps 15 and 16.
20. Check and adjust valve lash.
Bare Head Procedure
The bare head procedure is basically the same as the MUI or HEUI with intake manifold.
NOTICE |
---|
If the injectors are installed "off-engine" the injector tip will protrude from the head and be subject to damage. Before installing injectors, make sure the bottom surface of the head is raised off the surface of the work bench. |
1. Install a new injector brass sleeve or inspect and ream the existing sleeves as outlined in Tool Operating Manual NEHS0675. It is not necessary to ream new sleeves when using this procedure.
2. Install the unit injector using the appropriate installation procedure. For MUI Engines, make sure the injector is clamped in place.
3. Install long spacer leg (3) into the forcing bridge.
