- Align the dowel holes. Freeze the planetary ring gear (1). Limit freezing to -70°C (-94°F). Press the planetary ring gear into the axle housing (2). Check for full seating of the ring gear against housing shoulder. Wipe the gear dry. Lubricate the gear in order to prevent rust. Install the locking dowels. Peen the housing and close up half of the hole in order to retain the dowels in place.
- Press into the housing without freezing both the inboard bearing cup (4) and the outboard bearing cup (6). Check for the full seating of the cup against the housing shoulder.
- Press on the axle without heating the cone (7). Check for the full seating of the cone against the shoulder. Lubricate the cone roller assembly.
- Install the seal (8) to both the axle and the housing. Rubber toric seals and all surfaces that contain rubber toric seals must be clean and dry at assembly. Apply a thin film of lubricant to the contacting surfaces of the metal seal rings prior to assembly. Seal rings must be assembled square with the bore. The rubber toric seal must not swell. The rubber toric seal must not be twisted.
- Secure the axle in a vertical position. Secure the axle with the flange downward. Lower the housing over the axle with a lifting device.
- Press the bearing cone (5) into position and leave the end play remaining in the bearing. Lubricate the cone roller assembly.
- Lubricate the adjusting nut (3) and install the adjusting nut (3). Tighten the nut until only a slight end play remains in the axle assembly.
- Measure the torque that is required to rotate the housing (2). This is the seal drag torque. Fasten a bar across the axle housing in order to center the mounting face of the housing. Measure the rolling torque of the axle housing with a torque wrench. Use the following formula to calculate the seal drag torque. Record actual seal drag torque.
SDT = TWR X (L + BCR) / L
"SDT" is the seal drag torque that is measured in N·m.
"TWR" is the torque wrench reading in N·m.
"L" is the length of the torque wrench in meters.
"BCR" is the bolt circle radius (A) of the axle housing (2) in meters.

- Tighten the housing while you rotate the adjusting nut. Use the following formula in order to determine the required torque wrench reading.
TWR = (E + SDT) x L / (L + BCR)
"TWR" is the torque wrench reading.
"E" is the bearing preload 6.5 ± 2.5 N·m (58.0 ± 22.0 lb in).
"SDT" is the calculation for seal drag torque from 8.
"L" is the length of the torque wrench in meters.
"BCR" is the bolt circle radius (A) of the axle housing (2) in meters.

- Measure the preload torque. If the preload torque exceeds the specification, reseat the cone (5) against the nut. Turn the nut in the counterclockwise direction for 1/8 of a turn. Tighten the nut to the specification. Check the assembly in order to ensure that there is zero end play. Repeat the above steps for the opposite axle housing assembly.
