(10) Coat the splines of the brake shaft with 5P-0960 Grease Cartridge.

Note: Each side has six friction discs and five parking brake plates. Dip the friction disc and the parking brake plates in SAE 30 oil before assembly.

(11) Thickness of six friction discs and five parking brake plates is 35.50 ± 1.37 mm (1.398 ± 0.054 inch).

Thickness of one new 170-8714 Friction Disc ... 4.00 ± 0.12 mm (0.157 ± 0.005 inch)
Thickness of one new 3W-5159 Parking Brake Plate ... 2.30 ± 0.13 mm (0.091 ± 0.005 inch)

Note: The rolling torque of the subassembly of pinion gear (12) and the bearing cones (13) must not exceed 1.13 N·m (10.00 lb in). End play must not exceed 0.5 mm (0.02 inch).

(13) Heat the bearing cone to 120 °C (248 °F) for a maximum of eight hours. Install the bearing cone to the pinion gear. After the pinion gear and the bearing cone has cooled, position the assembly squarely against the locating shoulder.

(14) The rubber toric seals and all the contacting surfaces must be clean and dry at assembly. Prior to assembly, apply a thin layer of 6V-4876 Lubricant to the contacting surfaces of the metal seal rings. The seal rings must be assembled square with the bore. The rubber toric seal should not bulge and the rubber toric seal should not twist. Refer to Special Instruction, SEHS8364, "Assembly and Installation of Conventional Duo-Cone Seals".

(15) Lubricate the bore of the housing lightly with the lubricant that is being sealed.

(16) Torque for the 24 bolts ... 300 ± 40 N·m (221 ± 30 lb ft)

(17) Clean all the sealing surfaces before applying the sealant. Apply 6V-6640 Sealant to the thrust button prior to installation.

(18) Clean all the sealing surfaces before applying the sealant. Apply 6V-6640 Sealant to the cover assembly in continuous bead of diameter 1.5 mm (0.06 inch) along the center line and 5.0 mm (0.20 inch) inside the bolt holes. After you assemble the cover assemblies, tighten the bolts within five minutes. The pH of the sealing surface should not exceed 7.5.

(19) Heat the inner race and roller assembly to 120 °C (248 °F) for a maximum of eight hours. Install the inner race and roller assembly to the gear. After the gear and the inner race and roller assembly has cooled, position the assembly squarely against the locating shoulder.

(21) Heat the bearing cones to 120 °C (248 °F) for a maximum of eight hours. Install the bearing cone to the spindle. After the spindle and the bearing cone has cooled, position the assembly squarely against the locating shoulder.

(23) Torque for 12 bolts ... 1000 ± 125 N·m (738 ± 92 lb ft)

Procedure for Preloading the Sprocket Bearings

  1. All the parts must be clean and free from dirt. Lubricate the bearings (21) with SAE 30 oil.

  1. Rotate the sprocket hub (22) continuously.

  1. Gradually apply an axial force of 175000 ± 25000 N (39342 ± 5620 lb) and hold against the face of the retainer plate (20). Tighten three bolts 95 ± 10 N·m (70 ± 7 lb ft) that are equally spaced.

  1. Remove the axial force. Install the bolts (16) and tighten the bolts to 300 ± 40 N·m (221 ± 30 lb ft).

The brake assembly must be disengaged in order to allow the carrier assembly to rotate freely.

The maximum pressure that is required in order to disengage the brake ... 1380 kPa (200 psi)

The minimum pressure that is required in order to start to engage the brake ... 1140 kPa (165 psi)

When the brake assembly is fully engaged, the carrier assembly must not rotate until a torque of 2250 N·m (1660 lb ft) is applied at the input pinion.
