Problem

Oil and gas customers have identified oil leaks from behind the alternator pulley, and slight leakage around the bolts on the pulley. Manufacturing facility did not apply Loctite to the pulley/wear sleeve interface.

  1. Remove the four bolts (2) that fasten the pulley (1) to the auxiliary drive assembly. The bolts will not be reused discard the bolts.

  2. Clean the four threaded bolt holes in the auxiliary drive assembly using a carburetor cleaner or similar product.

  3. Using a new pulley (1), apply Loctite 648 retaining compound to the outer diameter surface where the wear sleeve will be installed as shown in Illustration 2.

  4. Install a new wear sleeve (3) and remove any excess sealant from the wear sleeve or pulley surfaces.

  5. Apply a continuous 1/8” bead of Anaerobic sealant Loctite 5188 flange sealant between the bolt holes and the pilot. Avoid Anaerobic sealant on the outer diameter of the pulley near the lip seal as shown in Illustration 3.

  6. Remove and install a new lip seal (4) prior to installing the pulley.

  7. Using four new bolts (2), apply clean engine oil to the threads of the bolts and under-head of the bolt prior to assembly.

  8. Install the pulley and torque the bolts, allow the anaerobic sealant to cure for 24 hours before placing the engine back into service.
