(1) Contaminated oil ring |
Remanufactured cylinder packs have been received by dealers that have buildup, which is caused by contaminated Volatile Corrosion Inhibitor (VCI) oil. Contaminated VCI oil is drying on the cylinder packs. This leaves a ring around the piston crown, which looks like rust. The buildup of oil that is around the outside of the piston crown is shown in Illustration 1.
Solution
Only the remanufactured cylinder packs that are listed in the Table 1 should be inspected for buildup of contaminated oil on the piston crown.

Only remanufactured cylinder packs have been recalled in order to be cleaned. Clean VCI oil will be reapplied to the remanufactured cylinder packs.

Remanufactured cylinder packs that have been cleaned and coated with VCI may still have stains that are related to cleaning. Refer to Illustration 2. These cylinder packs are acceptable to use for repair.
