Introduction

This Special Instruction has been established in order to communicate the improvements to the hardware and software that are available to optimize the cold starting capability. These improvements are available for the C-9 and C9 Engines in the 627G and 637G Wheel Tractor-Scrapers that are listed above.

The existing ether system on these machines uses a pulsed flow of ether in order to assist cold starting of the machine. The following procedures will convert the ether system into a system that uses a continuous flow of ether. The continuous flow of ether will improve the performance of the machine during cold starting.

The new software that is described in the following procedures will allow the continuous flow of ether to be enabled. The software also makes other adjustments that will improve the performance of the machine during cold starting.

Recommended Practices

The battery disconnect switch should be placed in the OFF position when the machine is not being operated. This practice will result in increased life of the battery and improved performance.

The ether bottle should be removed if ether will not be required and the temperature will be above 16° C (60° F) for an extended period of time. When the ether bottle is removed, replace the cap on the ether valve. Store the ether bottle in a location that is cool and dry.

Fluid Recommendations

Ensure that you are using the proper fluids for the environment of the machine. Refer to the following publications:

Procedure to Improve the Ether System

Table 1 lists the machines that require further updates to the ether system on the engine in order to improve the performance of the machine during cold starting.

( 1 ) The serial numbers for the wheel tractors correlate with the wheel scrapers that are listed above. The serial numbers for the wheel tractors are provided for reference only.

Machines that are listed in Table 2 were assembled with the latest configuration of the ether system on the engine. Therefore, these machines require only software updates.

Some dealers have installed ether aid through a program for product support that has been previously released. Confirm whether your machine is currently equipped with ether starting aid. If your machine is not equipped with ether starting aid, perform Special Instruction, REHS2550, "Installation of the Ether Starting Aid". Do not order the 241-4194 Fitting As and the 251-4345 Ether Atomizer Gp or install the 241-4194 Fitting As and the 251-4345 Ether Atomizer Gp . Both components will be replaced as part of the following procedure.

Install 303-9422 Ether Atomizer Gp with the orifice into the air stream.

    (A) Orient the elbow at 90° ± 5°.

    (1) 303-9422 Ether Atomizer Gp

  1. Replace the 251-4345 Ether Atomizer Gp with the 303-9422 Ether Atomizer Gp . Refer to Illustration 1.

    (2) 276-5436 Fitting As

  1. Replace the 241-4194 Fitting As with a 276-5436 Fitting As . Refer to Illustration 2 for the location of the fitting assembly.

  1. Readjust the routing of the ether line as you are reattaching the ether line to the atomizer and the fitting assembly. Confirm that the line is free of the following: pinch points, loops and points of contact. Excess length of the line must be removed.

Procedure to Update the Engine Software

  1. Refer to Table 5 in order to find the correct engine software for your machine. Download the new software. Use Cat ET to install the new software to the engine ECM.

    Table 5
Model     Serial Number Prefix of the Machine     Serial Number Prefix of the Engine     Software Part Number
    627G     S/N:CEZ     S/N:4ZF     303-8468

    637G     S/N:DEX and ; S/N:DEY     S/N:THX     305-3461

  1. Confirm that the update to the flash file for the engine software was completed successfully.

  1. Use AVSpare Electronic Technician (ET) to select the configuration screen for the scraper engine in order to set the "Ether Solenoid Configuration"parameter. Set the "Ether Solenoid Configuration" parameter to "Continuous Flow Solenoid (02)".

  1. Check for proper machine operation.
