Transmission Oil - Change

Personal injury or death can result from machine articulation or movement.

Machine frames can move and a person can be crushed.

Connect the steering frame lock link between the front and rear frames before working on machine. Secure clevis pin with locking pin.

Before operating the machine, fasten the steering frame lock link into the stored position and secure the clevis pin with locking pin.

Failure to lock into the stored position before operating can result in loss of steering.

NOTICE

Care must be taken to ensure that fluids are contained during performance of inspection, maintenance, testing, adjusting, and repair of the product. Be prepared to collect the fluid with suitable containers before opening any compartment or disassembling any component containing fluids.

Refer to Special Publication, NENG2500, "Dealer Service Tool Catalog" for tools and supplies suitable to collect and contain fluids on Cat products.

Dispose of all fluids according to local regulations and mandates.


  1. Operate the machine for a few minutes in order to warm the transmission oil.

  1. Park the machine on a level surface. Engage the parking brake. Stop the engine.

    Note: Hand tighten the NPT pipe nipple. Do not use tools.

  1. Remove transmission drain plug (1). Open the drain valve by installing a 1 inch NPT pipe nipple, 100 mm (4 inch). Drain the oil into a suitable container.

  1. Remove the pipe nipple and install the drain plug. Tighten the drain plug to 68 ± 7 N·m (50 ± 5 lb ft).

  1. Remove converter drain plug (4). Open the drain valve by installing a 1 inch NPT pipe nipple, 100 mm (4 inch). Drain the oil into a suitable container.

  1. Remove the pipe nipple and install the drain plug. Tighten the drain plug to 68 ± 7 N·m (50 ± 5 lb ft).

  1. Remove cover (3) and the magnetic tube and screen assembly from housing (2) .

  1. Remove the magnetic tube from the screen.

  1. Wash the magnetic tube and the screen in a clean, nonflammable solvent.

  1. Clean the magnets with a cloth, stiff bristle brush, or pressure air.


    NOTICE

    Do not drop or rap the magnets against any hard objects. Replace any damaged magnets.


  1. Clean the cover. Inspect the cover seal. Replace the seal if damaged.

  1. Insert the magnetic tube in the screen.

  1. Insert the screen and the magnetic tube in the housing.

  1. Install the seal, the cover, and the cover bolts.

  1. Change the transmission oil filter element.

  1. Remove transmission breather (5). Wash the transmission breather in clean, nonflammable solvent. Install the breather.

  1. Remove oil filler cap (6) and fill the transmission with oil.

    ReferenceFor information on lubricants and refill capacities, refer to the Operation and Maintenance Manual, "Lubricant Viscosities and Refill Capacities".

  1. Start and run the engine at low idle. Inspect the transmission for leaks.

  1. Operate the transmission control to circulate oil in the transmission.

  1. While the engine is running and at operating temperature, maintain the oil level between two marks (9) in sight gauge (7) .

    Note: The oil level varies significantly when the engine is stopped. The oil level should be above mark (8) before the engine is started.

  1. Stop the engine.
