IT62G Integrated Toolcarrier and 950G and 962G Wheel Loaders Engine Starting Caterpillar

Engine Starting
`
1.1. Engine Starting with Air Inlet Heater (If Equipped)
2.1. Engine Starting with Ether Starting Aid (If Equipped)

  1. Make sure that the transmission control is in the NEUTRAL position.

  1. Move the steering column to the desired position.

  1. Engage the parking brake.

  1. Fasten the seat belt.

  1. Make sure that the control levers are in the HOLD position.

  1. Turn the engine start switch to the START position in order to start the engine.

  1. Release the engine start switch key after the engine starts.

NOTICE

Do not crank the engine for more than 30 seconds. Allow the starter to cool for two minutes before cranking again. Turbocharger damage can result if the engine rpm is not kept low until the oil gauge display verifies that the oil pressure is sufficient.

Engine Starting with Air Inlet Heater (If Equipped)

------ WARNING! ------

If equipped with an air inlet heater (AIH) for cold weather starting, do not use aerosol types of starting aids such as ether. Such use could result in an explosion and personal injury.

----------------------

  1. Follow Step 1 through Step 5 of the Engine Starting Procedure.

  1. Turn the engine start switch to the ON position. Alert indicator (1) on the instrument panel will come on during the heating process.

  1. When alert indicator (1) goes off, turn the engine start switch to the START position in order to start the engine. Depress the accelerator pedal slightly as you crank the engine.

  1. Release the engine start switch key and the accelerator pedal after the engine starts.

Note: If the ambient temperature is above 10°C (50°F), you will not need to preheat. The engine can be started even though the alert indicator has not turned off.

NOTICE

If the start switch key is turned to the off position before attempting to start the engine, or if the engine does not start, allow the heater element to cool for one minute before the next attempt to start the engine. Do not crank the engine for more than 30 seconds. Allow the starter to cool for two minutes before cranking again.

Turbocharger damage can result, if the engine rpm is not kept low until the engine oil light/gauge verifies the oil pressure is sufficient.

Extended Postheat Cycle (if equipped) - Push switch (2) in order to extend the postheat cycle for another 30 seconds.

NOTICE

The postheat cycle begins when the engine starts. When the postheat cycle is complete the operator has the option to push the switch located in the cab to obtain 30 seconds of extended postheat. This will aid in smoothing a rough idling engine or clearing up white smoke.

Engine Starting with Ether Starting Aid (If Equipped)

NOTICE

Inject starting aid (ether), only while cranking the engine, or after initial start-up, until the engine is running smoothly.

Use sparingly, excessive ether without cranking can cause piston and ring damage.

Wait approximately two seconds before injecting again.

Use ether for cold starting purposes only.

After every 30 seconds of engine cranking, allow two minutes for starting motor to cool before cranking again.

Turbocharger damage can result, if the engine rpm is not kept low until the engine oil light/gauge verifies the oil pressure is sufficient.

  1. Follow Step 1 through Step 6 of the Engine Starting Procedure.

Note: Partially depress the accelerator pedal while you crank the engine.

  1. Push ether starting aid switch (3) at two second intervals as the engine is cranked. Continue use until the engine starts and the engine is running smoothly.

  1. Release the engine start switch key and the accelerator pedal after the engine starts.

For starting below −18°C (0°F), the use of one of the following cold weather starting aids is recommended:

  • Coolant heater

  • Fuel heater

  • Jacket water heater

  • Extra battery capacity

ReferenceAt temperatures below −23°C (−10°F), consult your AVSpare dealer for additional information or refer to Special Publication, SEBU5898, "Cold Weather Recommendations".
