  5. Turn the key start switch to the ON position. The system performs an automatic self test. When you turn on the start switch key the test is performed. If the test is complete without any faults, proceed to next step. If the system detects a fault, check the electrical system. Make all of the necessary repairs before you start the engine.

  6. Turn the start switch to the START position. Crank the engine. Release the key when the engine starts.

NOTICE

Do not crank the engine for more than 30 seconds. Allow the starter to cool for two minutes before cranking the engine again.

Turbocharger damage can result, if the engine speed is not kept low until the engine oil gauge verifies the oil pressure is sufficient.

Engine Starting Below 0 °C (32 °F)

NOTICE

Inject starting aid (ether), only while cranking the engine, or after initial start-up, until the engine is running smoothly.

Use sparingly. Excessive ether without cranking can cause piston and ring damage.

Wait approximately two seconds before injecting again.

Use ether for cold starting purposes only.

After 30 seconds of engine cranking, allow two minutes for starting motor to cool before cranking again.

Turbocharger damage can result, if the engine speed is not kept low until the engine oil gauge verifies the oil pressure is sufficient.

  6. Turn the start switch to the START position. Crank the engine. Release the key when the engine starts.

Note: The ether injection system is automatic. Ether injection is controlled by the electronic control module for the engine.

After the engine starts, ether can be manually injected by pushing and releasing the top of the rocker switch until the engine is running smoothly. Manual injection is limited by the electronic control module.

For starting below −18°C (0°F), the use of the cold weather starting aids is recommended. A fuel heater, a jacket water heater, and extra battery capacity may be required.

At temperatures below −23°C (−10°F), consult your AVSpare dealer. For cold weather starting, see Operation and Maintenance Manual, SEBU5898, "Cold Weather Recommendations".
