Use the LOW speed for most ripping operations. It is better to use additional shanks rather than increasing speed.

Always use the center shank when you are ripping with one shank. If the material breaks up satisfactorily, more shanks may be used.

Cross rip only when it is necessary.

When you are ripping for scraper loading, rip in the same direction as the scrapers load.

Rip downhill whenever it is possible.

NOTICE

Do not turn or back the machine while shanks are in the ground. Twisting strain on the shanks and tips may cause failure.

Inspect the ripper tips frequently for excessive wear.

Rip the ground as deep as possible according to ground conditions. Sometimes, you may rip at partial depth. You can remove the material in natural layers.

Keep material on top of the unripped formation in order to cushion the machine and provide traction.

The sizing of the material is controlled by the depth of the pass and by the width of the pass.

Three shanks work well in these materials. Use as many shanks as possible in order to break the material to the desired size without stalling the machine or without hanging up the machine.

Rock with Fractures, Faults and Planes of Weakness

Illustration 4g00110500

Use two shanks so that the rocks break out in small pieces, and so that the machine can manage the job easily. When the machine begins to stall, use only the center shank. If the tracks spin, use only the center shank.

Solid Rock, Granite, and Hard Material that is Difficult to Rip

Illustration 5g00110504

Use one shank in material that is difficult to rip or material that tends to break out in large slabs or pieces.

Asphalt Road Surfaces

Raise the ripper shanks in order to lift out material and break material.

Concrete Road Surfaces

Use a single ripper shank. One shank ripping is especially effective when you are severing reinforcing rods or mesh.
