  1. Return the governor control lever to the LOW IDLE position.

    Illustration 6g00101506

  1. Turn the key start switch to the ON position. The system performs an automatic self test. When you turn on the start switch key, the test is performed. If the test is complete without any faults, proceed to the next step. If the system detects a fault, check the electrical system. Make all of the necessary repairs before you start the engine.

  1. The engine oil pressure light should turn on, and the alternator indicator light should turn on.

    Illustration 8g00101512

  1. If the temperature is below 10°C (50°F), push in the button for the air inlet heater. Prior to the start-up of the engine, the indicator for the air inlet heater will come on during the heating cycle.

Note: If the ambient temperature is above 10°C (50°F), you do not need to use the air inlet heater. The indicator does not need to turn off in order to start the engine.

  1. When the indicator for the air inlet heater turns off, turn the start switch key to the START position. Crank the engine. Release the start switch key when the engine starts.

------ WARNING! ------

This machine is equipped with an air inlet heater for cold weather starting. Do not use aerosol can types of starting aids such as ether. Such use could result in an explosion and personal injury.

----------------------

NOTICE

If the start switch key is turned to the OFF position before attempting to start the engine, or if the engine does not start, allow the air inlet heater element to cool for one minute before attempting to start the engine again. Do not crank the engine for more than 30 seconds. Allow the starter to cool for two minutes before cranking the engine again.

Turbocharger damage can result if the engine rpm is not kept low until the engine oil light/gauge verifies the oil pressure is sufficient.

Extended Postheat Cycle for the Air Inlet Heater - Depress the switch on the dashboard in order to extend the postheat cycle for 30 seconds.

NOTICE

The postheat cycle begins when the engine starts. When the postheat cycle is complete, the operator has the option to push the switch located on the dash to obtain 30 seconds of extended postheat. This will aid in smoothing a cold, rough idling engine or clearing up white smoke.

Ether Starting Aid (If Equipped)

NOTICE

Inject starting aid (ether), only while cranking the engine, or after initial start-up, until the engine is running smoothly.

Use sparingly. Excessive ether without cranking can cause piston and ring damage.

Wait approximately two seconds before injecting again.

Use ether for cold starting purposes only.

After 30 seconds of engine cranking, allow two minutes for starting motor to cool before cranking again.

Turbocharger damage can result, if the engine speed is not kept low until the engine oil gauge verifies the oil pressure is sufficient.

  1. Push in the button for the ether starting aid. Release the button for the ether starting aid.

  1. While you are cranking the engine, push the button for the ether starting aid in intervals of two seconds. Until the engine is running smoothly, continue to operate the ether starting aid.

  1. Release the start switch key when the engine starts.

For starting below -18°C (0°F), the use of the cold weather starting aids is recommended. A fuel heater, a jacket water heater, and extra battery capacity may be required.

At temperatures below -23°C (-10°F), consult your AVSpare dealer. In order to start the engine in cold weather, see the Operation and Maintenance Manual, SEBU5898, "Cold Weather Recommendations".
