Fuel System Primary Filter - Replace

Personal injury or death may result from failure to adhere to the following procedures. Fuel leaked or spilled onto hot surfaces or electrical components can cause a fire. Clean up all leaked or spilled fuel. Do not smoke while working on the fuel system. Turn the disconnect switch OFF or disconnect the battery when changing fuel filters. |

Care must be taken to ensure that fluids are contained during performance of inspection, maintenance, testing, adjusting, and repair of the product. Be prepared to collect the fluid with suitable containers before opening any compartment or disassembling any component containing fluids. Refer to Special Publication, NENG2500, "Dealer Service Tool Catalog" for tools and supplies suitable to collect and contain fluids on Cat products. Dispose of all fluids according to local regulations and mandates. |
- The fuel shutoff valve is located at the rear of the machine under the fuel tank. Open the access door. Turn the red handle of the fuel shutoff valve in order to shut off the fuel supply.
- Open the engine compartment door on the left side of the machine.

Illustration 2 g03708251 - In order to drain primary filter (1), open drain valve (3) on water separator bowl (2). The water separator bowl is under primary filter (1). Catch the fuel in a suitable container.
Note: Discard any drained fluids according to local regulations.
- Remove primary filter (1) and water separator bowl (2).
- Remove water separator bowl (2) from the primary filter element (1).
- Wash water separator bowl (2) in a clean nonflammable solvent. Use pressure air to dry water separator bowl (2).
- Install the clean water separator bowl onto a new primary filter element.
- Wash the filter mounting base in clean, nonflammable solvent. Make sure that all of the old seal is removed.
- Coat the seal of the new filter element with clean diesel fuel.
- Install the new filter element by hand.
Instructions for the installation of the filters are printed on the side of each AVSpare spin-on filter. For non-AVSpare filters, refer to the installation instructions that are provided by the supplier of the filter.
- Go to “Fuel System Secondary Filters -Replace” information to replace the secondary fuel filters.

Do not fill the fuel filters with fuel before installing the fuel filters. The fuel will not be filtered and could be contaminated. Contaminated fuel will cause accelerated wear to fuel system parts. |
Note: Before you replace the secondary fuel filter elements, replace the primary fuel filter element. Refer to the“ Fuel System Primary Filter - Replace” information for the replacement procedure.

- Verify that The fuel shutoff valve under the fuel tank is closed. Open the access door. Turn the red handle of the fuel shutoff valve in order to shut off the fuel supply.

Illustration 4 g02039148 - Remove the filter elements. Discard the filter elements properly.
- Clean the filter housing base. Make sure that all of the old seal is removed.
- Coat the seal of the new filter element with clean diesel fuel.
- Install the new filter elements by hand.

- Open the fuel shutoff valve.
- Prime the fuel system, if the machine is equipped with a fuel priming pump.
Refer to the Operation and Maintenance Manual, "Fuel System - Prime" for the proper procedure.
- Close the engine compartment door.
- Close the access door at the rear of the machine.
