Definitions

Industry Standards

  • Society of Automotive Engineers (SAE) J1197: 2002 Rated Operating Load for Loaders Equipped with Log or Material Forks without Vertical Mast - specifies that the rated operating load is the minimum of either 50% of the full turn static tipping load (FTSTL) OR the minimum hydraulic capacity of the machine.

  • European Committee for Standardization (CEN) EN 474-3: 2006 Earth-moving machinery - Safety - Part 3: Requirements for loaders - specifies that the rated operating load on rough terrain is the minimum of either 60% of the full turn static tipping load (FTSTL) OR the minimum hydraulic capacity of the machine.

  • European Committee for Standardization (CEN) EN 474-3 - specifies that the rated operating load on firm and level ground is the minimum of either 80% of the full turn static tipping load (FTSTL) OR the minimum hydraulic capacity of the machine.

Load Center

The load center is defined as the distance from the tine shank (vertical portion of the tine that a load rests against) to the center of the object being lifted.

Static Tiping Loads (Forks Level)

Static tipping loads are based on the following assumptions: machines are non-moving, on firm and level ground, forks level, and tipping loads are measured at the moment when the rear tires just begin to lift off the ground. Static tipping loads are different for each machine configuration, pallet fork, and load center combination.

The straight static tipping load (SSTL) is a measure of the machine's stability in the non-articulated condition. SSTL for a machine equipped with pallet forks is calculated with the pallet forks level and occurs when the lift arms are level.

The full turn static tipping load (FTSTL) is a measure of the machine's stability in the fully articulated condition. FTSTL for a machine equipped with pallet forks is calculated with the pallet forks level and occurs when the lift arms are level.

Fork Specification Charts

The geometric dimensions, operating weight, static tipping loads, and rated operating loads can be found by referencing the Fork Specifications Sections below and machine diagrams that are provided for each machine configuration, fork group, and load center combination.

Note: Contact your AVSpare dealer if the load chart for a specific combination is not available.

Rated Operating Loads

------ WARNING! ------

To prevent injury, do not exceed the rated load capacity that is stamped in the side of each fork tine.

----------------------

------ WARNING! ------

To prevent injury, do not exceed the rated load capacity of the machine. If the machine is not on level ground, load capacities will vary.

----------------------

Determining the rated operating load for a machine equipped with a specific pallet fork and load center can be accomplished in three easy steps:

  1. Find the section that corresponds to the machine, fork, and load center.

  1. Select an industry standard based on underfoot conditions to determine the rated operating load:

    • SAE J1197

    • CEN EN 474-3

  1. Find the respective payload capacity curve that matches the industry standard selected. The rated operating load is defined as the MINIMUM value from this payload capacity curve.

Note: The rated operating load for each industry standard (the minimum value from each payload capacity curve) is provided in the Fork Specifications section.

The rated operating loads provided in the Fork Specifications section considers the full lifting range of the machine. Although AVSpare recommends that the rated operating loads provided in the Fork Specification section be used for all applications, the operator may choose to exceed these ratings depending on the specific lifting height requirements of a given machine application. The operator must then follow the steps below to determine the operating load for the desired lifting range:

  1. Find the section that corresponds to the machine, fork, and load center desired.

  1. Select an industry standard based on underfoot conditions to determine the rated operating load:

    • SAE J1197

    • CEN EN 474-3

  1. Find the respective payload capacity curve that matches the industry standard selected.

  1. Find the lower and upper bounds of the desired lifting range on the payload capacity curve.

  1. The operating load for the desired lifting range is calculated as the MINIMUM value from this portion of the payload capacity curve.

Illustration 1g01807513

Example 1:

Determine the operating load from the set of payload capacity curves shown in Illustration 1. Assume the machine is on rough terrain and that the industry standard is CEN EN 474-3. The desired lifting range is from a Hinge (B) Pin Height of 20 inches up to 60 inches.

The operating payload can be estimated from the payload capacity curves shown in Illustration 1. The minimum payload for this scenario occurs with the Hinge (B) Pin Height at 60 inches. The operating payload can be estimated from the chart by drawing a vertical line up or down to the capacity axis as shown in Illustration 1. The value at this intersection point, 8000 lbs, represents the operating load in pounds for this example.

Example 2:

Determine the operation load from the set of payload capacity curves shown in Illustration 1. Assume the machine is on firm and level ground and that the industry standard is CEN EN 474-3. The desired lifting range is from a Hinge (B) Pin Height of 508 mm up to 3175 mm.

The operating payload can be estimated from the payload capacity curves shown in Illustration 1. The minimum payload for this scenerio occurs with the Hinge (B) Pin Height at 3175 mm. The operating payload can be estimated from the chart by drawing a vertical line up or down to the capacity axis as shown in Illustration 1. The value at this intersection point, 5000 kg, represents the operating load in kilograms for this example.

Hydraulic Capacity (Forks Level)

Illustration 2g01807533

The hydraulic lift and tilt capacity of the machine is calculated throughout the entire Hinge (B) Pin Height range with the forks level. The capacity curves contain information for both the lift and the tilt capacity as seen in Illustration 2.

Note: Depending on the machine configuration, pallet fork, and load center selected, the hydraulic lift capacity could be large enough that it is greater than the maximum value in the plot area as seen in Illustration 2. Consequently, the lift capacity does not show up in the plot area.
