(43)Tractor Engine Valve Lash

1. Check and adjust with engine stopped.

If valve lash is within .003 inch (0.07 mm) of lash given, no adjustment is required.


NOTICE

Always turn flywheel in direction of normal rotation. Do not use starting motor to turn flywheel.


2. Remove valve covers.

3. Remove pinion and spacer.

4. Remove inspection cover.

5. Install pinion without spacer.

6. Turn pinion to align hole in flywheel housing with hole in flywheel.

7. Install 3 inch (76 mm) bolt (removed in step 3) in flywheel.

The valves for No. 1 or No. 7 cylinder are closed at this point.

If valves for No. 1 cylinder are closed - adjust exhaust valves 1, 4, 5 and 8.

Adjust inlet valves 1, 3, 6 and 8.

If valves for No. 7 cylinder are closed - adjust exhaust valves 2, 3, 6 and 7.

Adjust inlet valves 2, 4, 5 and 7.

8. Turn adjusting screw counterclockwise 2 clicks or more to provide clearance between rocker assembly and valve.
9. Turn adjusting screw clockwise to obtain zero lash. There should be no free rocker movement of adjusting screw button lateral movement.


NOTICE

The adjusting screw button can still be rotated by finger pressure even when it is in contact with valve stem and clearance is zero. Turning the adjusting screw clockwise beyond this point will force the valve off its seat, and final lash setting will be incorrect.


10. Turn screw counterclockwise specified number of clicks on detent (see page 27).

11. Remove bolt and turn flywheel 360°.
12. Install bolt in flywheel. Adjust remaining valves.

13. Remove pinion and install spacer under pinion.
14. Remove bolt from flywheel.
15. Install inspection cover.

Check Valve Rotation:

After checking valve lash, and before installing the valve cover:

1. Start the engine and run at low idle.
2. Watch the valves for rotation.
3. Each valve should turn slightly each time the valve closes. If not, contact your AVSpare dealer.
4. Stop the engine. Inspect the valve cover gasket. Use a new gasket if necessary.
5. Install the valve covers.

(44)Scraper Engine Valve Lash

NOTE: If the lash is within .003 inch (0.07 mm) of the lash given, no adjustment is required.

Check and adjust valve lash with the engine stopped. Remove the valve cover.


NOTICE

Always turn the flywheel in direction of normal rotation. Do not use starting motor to turn flywheel.


To Check Valve Lash:

1. Remove timing bolt and plug from flywheel housing.

2. Turn flywheel slowly to close No. 1 exhaust and inlet valves, and allow timing bolt to be installed in flywheel.
3. Check lash for No. 1, No. 3 and No. 5 exhaust valves. Adjust if necessary.
4. Check lash for No. 1, No. 3 and No. 5 inlet valves. Adjust if necessary.
5. Remove timing bolt from flywheel.

6. Rotate flywheel 360° to close No. 6 exhaust and inlet valves and allow timing bolt to be installed in flywheel.
7. Check lash for No. 2, No. 4 and No. 6 exhaust valves. Adjust if necessary.
8. Check lash for No. 2, No. 4 and No. 6 inlet valves. Adjust if necessary.
9. Remove timing bolt and install plug.
10. Install camshaft cover.

To Adjust Valve Lash:

1. Insert a cross point screwdriver into hole in side of cam follower.

2. Turn screwdriver clockwise to increase lash, or counterclockwise to decrease lash.

Check Valve Rotation:

After checking valve lash, and before installing valve cover:

1. Start engine and run at low idle.
2. Watch the valves for rotation.
3. Each valve should turn slightly each time the valve closes. If not, contact your AVSpare dealer.
4. Stop the engine. Inspect the valve cover gasket. Use a new gasket if necessary.
5. Install the valve cover.

(45)Ejector Carrier Rollers

1. Raise and block ejector to relieve weight on carrier roller.

2. Remove cover.

3. Remove cotter pin, locknut, washer and outer bearing.
4. Pack roller cavity with grease.
5. Install outer bearing, washer and locknut.

6. Tighten locknut until roller locks, then back nut off 1/6 turn.

NOTE: Bearings are properly adjusted when roller turns freely without end play.

7. Install cotter pin.
8. Pack with grease and install cup.

NOTE: For roller height adjustment, see Item 64.

(46)Hydraulic System

NOTICE

Machine level bowl lowered ejector forward, parking brake applied and engines stopped.


1. Remove tank filler cap slowly to relieve pressure.

2. Remove hydraulic tank drain plug.

3. Open drain valve and allow oil to drain.
4. Change hydraulic filter elements. See Item (31).
5. Close tank drain valve. Clean and install drain plug.

6. Remove tank filler screen. Wash screen in clean solvent.
7. Shake or blow dry.

------ WARNING! ------

When using pressure air, wear safety glasses and protective clothing. Use 30 PSI (2 kg/cm2) maximum pressure air for cleaning purposes.

------WARNING!--------
8. Install screen in tank.

9. Fill tank. See REFILL CAPACITIES. Start engine and allow oil to circulate.

10. Stop engine and check oil level. Add oil if necessary.

(47)Front Wheel Bearings

1. jack up and block under axle.

2. Remove hub cap.

3. Remove cotter pin and lock pin.

4. Tighten adjusting nut to 100 ± 10 lb. feet (13,8 ± 1,38 mkg) while rotating wheel.

5. Make certain wheel turns freely. Loosen nut 1/6 turn.

6. Install pin in nearest hole. Install cotter pin.

7. Inspect gasket. Use new one if necessary.

8. Install hub cap.

9. Lubricate wheel bearing through fitting.

(48)Cooling Systems - Changing Antifreeze Solution1

NOTE: When permanent antifreeze and water solutions are used in the cooling system, the solution should be drained and replaced every 2000 hours, or yearly.

When additions of inhibitor are made to the cooling system every 500 hours, or three months, it is not necessary to drain and refill yearly.

Whenever draining and refilling the cooling system, always recheck the coolant level when the engine reaches normal operating temperature.

Use clean water that is low in scale forming minerals - not softened water.

Check specific gravity of antifreeze solution frequently in cold weather to assure adequate protection.

Add AVSpare Corrosion Inhibitor. Follow recommendations given on container.

Inhibitor contains alkali, avoid contact with skin and eyes.

------WARNING!--------

NOTE: The engine cooling systemis protected to -20°F (-29°C), with permanent-type antifreeze, when shipped from the factory.

1. Run engines until coolant is at operating temperature. Park machine on level ground and stop engines.

2. Turn tractor filler cap slowly to relieve pressure, then remove cap.

3. Open tractor radiator drain valve and allow coolant to drain.

4. Turn scraper filler cap slowly to relieve pressure, then remove cap.

5. Open scraper radiator drain valve and allow coolant to drain.
6. Remove drain plug from scraper engine oil cooler.
7. Remove drain plug from tractor brake oil cooler.
8. Remove drain plug from tractor engine oil cooler.
9. Close tractor and scraper drain valves.
10. Clean and install all drain plugs.
11. Mix antifreeze solution to provide protection to the lowest expected ambient temperature.
12. Add antifreeze solution. See REFILL CAPACITIES.
13. Install tractor and scraper filler caps.


1If machine is to be stored in or shipped to an area with below freezing temperatures, cooling system must be drained completely, or protected to lowest expected ambient temperature.

(49)Differentials And Final Drives


NOTICE

Machine level, scraper lowered, parking brake set, differential and final drive lubricant warm and engines stopped.


1. Position wheels so final drive drain plugs are at bottom. Remove drain plugs.

2. Remove tractor differential drain plug and allow lubricant to drain.

3. Remove scraper differential drain plug and allow lubricant to drain.
4. Clean all drain plugs.
5. Install drain plugs in differentials and final drives when completely drained.

6. Fill tractor differential and final drives.

7. Fill scraper differential and final drives.

8. To speed filling, add lubricant at final drives. Position wheels so drain plugs are at bottom.
9. Remove final drive fill plugs.
10. Fill at differential and final drives until correct amount of lubricant has been used. See REFILL CAPACITIES.

11. Check lubricant level, after a short period of operation, and add lubricant if necessary.

(50)Steering Column Shaft

Lubricate 1 fitting.

(51)Steering Gear Housing And Lower Bearing

1. Remove fill plug. Maintain oil level to plug opening. Clean and install plug.

2. Remove plug from steering column.

3. Lubricate lower bearing with 2 or 3 squirts of oil. Clean and install plug.

(52)Scraper Starter Pinion Housing

1. Remove drain plug.

2. Remove fill plug.
3. Clean and install drain plug.
4. Fill housing. See REFILL CAPACITIES.
5. Clean and install fill plug.
