  • Description of Change: A new front crankshaft seal and a new rear crankshaft seal are now in production. Production for both seals started 9January 2003. These new seals are for the front and rear sealing journals of the crankshaft. The new seals incorporate a one piece seal/wear sleeve combination. The new crankshaft seals have a redesigned wear sleeve that has a flanged face. This new flanged face rotates with the crankshaft in order to keep dirt away from the sealing lip. This will provide better control of contaminants.

The removal procedure for the new seals has been changed, from the former seal design because of the new flanged face on the wear sleeve. The seal face is blocked or hidden by the new flanged face on the wear sleeve. Refer to the section "Removal Procedure" and table 2 for the required removal tools. The assembly procedure for the new seals has not changed from the former seal design. Refer to section "Installation Procedure" and table 3 for the required tools for assembly.

Adaptable To: The new crankshaft front seal and the new rear seal is adaptable to the above Engines: 3406, 3408, 3412, 3456, C15 and C16. The new crankshaft seals are a direct replacement for the former seals. Refer to table 1 below for the new part numbers and the former part numbers.

    NOTICE

Keep all parts clean from contaminants.

Contaminants may cause rapid wear and shortened component life.

Note: The seal and the wear sleeve must be replaced at the same time. Once the seal and the wear sleeve are separated, these components cannot be used again. Refer to Special Instruction, SMHS8508, "Special Handling Information and Installation Instructions for Crankshaft Seal Groups That Have Hydrodynamic Grooves In the Sealing Lip" before the seal is serviced.

Note: Do not use any type of lubricant during the installation of the crankshaft seal and the wear sleeve.

      NOTICE

The front and rear seals and wear sleeves have different spiral grooves in the seal. Because of this type of design, the front seal group for an engine is different from the rear seal group. If a seal group is installed on the wrong end of the engine, oil can actually be taken out of the engine instead of moving oil back into the engine.

      Crankshaft seal installation

Note: Install the seal with the directional arrow outward in order to show the direction of the crankshaft rotation.

    1. Before installation of the crankshaft seal and the wear sleeve, inspect the crankshaft for scratches. Also, inspect the crankshaft for any distortion on the surface that may lead to an out of round condition. Use a polishing cloth in order to remove any imperfections on the crankshaft.

    1. Use 4C-9500 Quick Cure Primer to clean the outside diameter of the crankshaft.

Note: The new seal comes with the retaining compound that is already applied to the inside diameter of the wear sleeve.

      Typical example

    1. Fasten Tool (A) to the crankshaft with Tool (B) .

    1. Position wear sleeve (2) and seal (1) on Tool (A). Install Tool (D) for the front seal, or Tool (E) for the rear seal, onto Tool (A) . Lubricate the face of the washer on Tool (C). Install Tool (C) on Tool (A) .

    1. Tighten Tool (C) until Tool (D) or Tool (E) contacts Tool (A) .

    1. Remove Tool (C) and then remove either Tool (D) or Tool (E). Remove Tools (A) and (B). Check the crankshaft seal and the wear sleeve for the correct installation.
